I have done geocaching a few years ago with a different GPSr. Now I am trying to get back into it.

 

I have a Garmin eTrex 20x. I am a premium member.

 

Question re how to get waypoints onto my GPSr

If I use Firefox, I can download a .gpx file for a single geocache directly to my device.

If I use Chrome, I can use an intermediate program (EasyGPS) to get the file I've downloaded onto my device.

However, when I look at this geocache on my device, I'm expecting to see the description, logs & hint info -- I'm not. This is why I went for the premium membership.

 

Question re maps

When I'm navigating on my GPSr, the map isn't very good -- how would I improve it? For example, the roads (I think they're roads) are in light blue. Hard to see.

Delete any and all files loaded as a basic member.

These stop the GPS from reading Premium Member files as you being a PM.

 

Decriptions should then be seen...

Thanks, that worked. (To be clear, I deleted the .gpx files from my Garmin directory on my device).

 

more basic questions:

1. From the new search page on the Geocaching.com page, is there any way to download geocaches from my search results? I have to keep using the old search.

2. Is there a way to download multiple .gpx info at once?

That is why I use a smartphone and not a GPS unit anymore. I can even store caches for off line use. It's the best thing ever for me and geocaching on the fly.

The hint will only show if you are 'Navigating' to the cache.

What finally worked was (while my device was plugged into my PC), I opened geocaching.com in Internet Explorer. I went to a cache I wanted to find and clicked on the "Send to My GPS" option. I got a message to install Garmin Communicator, which I did. After that I had absolutely no problem loading caches onto my device. Doing this will also load all of the cache descriptions and hints to your device.

 

Note: You have to do this on IE. Garmin Communicator didn't work for me on Google or Firefox.

 

I also added a topo map from www.gpsfiledepot.com because most of my caching occurs in the mountains.

Send to my GPS works on some browsers, but not all. Your best bet, as long as you are a premium member, is to run pocket queries. You can load a thousand at a time that way. More if you use GSAK.

lol.. I haven't figured out how to do pocket queries yet. I just wanted to pass on that the "Send to GPS" seems to only work on Internet Explorer when using Garmin Communicator. As a total newbie to using a gps device, it took me hours to figure THAT part out. And yes I tried to search the forums, but not all of the info in the forums applied to my device. I ended up learning by trial and error.

I have been busy finding caches during the past week!

Here's what I'm currently doing:

- I created a pocket query, downloaded it to my computer, unzipped it, then copied the 2 files (1 containing geocache info; 1 containing waypoints) to my Garmin directory on my GPSr

- On the weekend, I wanted to get a bit out of town. So I performed a geocache search on the computer, then with those results displayed on the map, clicked one by one in the area I was interested in, and selected 'Send to GPS' for each. (there's probably a better way)

- I was also able to load a opensource map onto my GPS (I bought a micro SD card to store the map on, within my device).

The 2 files that result from the unzipping process should be placed in the Garmin\GPX folder, not the Garmin folder.

You could create a PQ for that other area. An easy way is to choose a geocache that's in the center of the area you're going to, then use that cache's GC code as the center point in your Pocket Query. That GC Code would go in the "From Origin" section of the Pocket Query page, select "GC Code" in that section and then enter the GC code that you want to use a center point.

 

FYI, if you are getting more than 1000 caches in your search radius, then you can use Project-GC's PQ Splitter to divide that search into multiple sets based on hidden date. But that may be more advanced than what you need right now.
