Movies with Geocaching - Canonical List

I'm looking to collect a list of all movies featuring Geocaching in any form. Here's what I have so far:

G.P.S. The Movie

Tracker

Are You Scared 2

Find Me

Splinterheads

Excluding television episodes (and the slew of brief documentaries and short films) what else am I missing? Feel free to drop your two cents in here on the quality of the movie - but here's the twist - rate them on how well they represent Geocaching!

Whoa dude! I think you're the expert, and already have the Canonical list. I only knew about Spinterheads and G.P.S. The Movie. And as evidenced by my 3,500 posts, I hang around here a lot (way too much, actually).

I'm going to try to get Splinterheads tonight at Blockbuster, but I'm pretty convinced I'm going to have to order it and get it sent to the store. I'm also going to buy a copy from Geoswag.com. But I figure I'll get them a rental too. No review until I see the whole movie, which will probably be a few days.

There were actually two different Law and Order episodes. The second of which portrayed us a uber-geeks, and ridiculously obsessed with being FTF.

I've only actually seen two of the movies (GPS & AreYouScared2) and both movies are all about the FTF. Unfortunately, it seems to be the only way Hollywood knows to portray caching. Well, hopefully the new geocaching magazine will solve that. Wait... what's it called again? :)

If anyone knows where I can get/see a copy of Tracker let me know. It seems to be out of print.

I watched it(Splinterheads) last night. I liked it. Laughed a LOT. I think they portrayed geocaching fairly, made me want to go out and cache!

I've finally watched the movie! Here's the promised review:

As a movie containing Geocaching this is the best flick to date. Galaxy (who Groundspeak hooked up with a promotional account), takes Justin on his first caching adventure and explains the sport thusly: "It's part hike, part treasure-hunt". As Hollywood's reigning geocaching ambassador she does a great job. She protects a cache from muggles, trades up swag but doesn't let Justin grab without a trade, performs cache maintenance on her own hide, and even reads the logs from cachers that found her cache. The cache locations are great, the single micro is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, an actual yellow eTrex is featured, as is Geocaching.com on Galaxy's laptop, but the real proof that this is a movie written by a cacher is the playground scene. Galaxy secretly leads Justin to another cache and carries on a conversation but continues to look for it while he's falling in love, oblivious to her real reason for going there. The primary complaint cachers levy against the plot is how Galaxy seems lost at the side of the road looking for a cache that is still miles away. The answer is obvious - they simplified the sport for the sake of the narrative - she was looking for a trailhead additional waypoint! It could have had more caching but what it did have was done well. Rating: 5 stars out of 5.

As a movie itself, Splinterheads is pretty good. It basically is one of those coming-of-age films about grown men. A slacker gets a kick in the pants and, for once in his life, does something about it. The acting is pretty good and the casting fits the characters. The dialogue is needlessly crass at times but hey, I can imagine that's how carnies talk. The sub-plots are kinda goofy and distracting but also very funny. This kind of story telling isn't for everyone but I enjoyed it - even without the geocaching. Add in the quality caching as part of the story and the movie is a big winner. Rating 4 stars out of 5.

There was quite a bit of violence in Splinterheads, not to mention drug use and swearing - that's why it had an R rating.

The humour didn't go far enough to be actually funny - they probably would have been better off if they'd backed off on the unsuccessful raunchy humour and stuck with PG-13 guidelines.

I really didnt like Splinterheads. I was told it was a movie about geocaching, instead of what it really is, which is a movie that contains a couple geocaching scenes. It really wasnt that great of a movie at all, with or without geocaching.

I actually really liked Splinterheads! But it was a tiny independent film, and was a total flop, only playing in 3 theatres, and making $16,000 at the box office Box office mojo page But they might have done OK on video sales, seeing as it was a low budget indie film. And I do believe they have a contract to show it on USA network in the future. Don't quote me on that, but I'm pretty sure. :)

I watched Splinterheads last week and felt the portions of the movie relating to geocaching (a total of about 6 minutes) were good, but the rest of the show was class B and a bit boring and predictable. The language and drug use make this an adults only film, and thus it doesn't really work well as a movie you can recommend to others for an introduction to geocaching. Plus, the main character was horribly-written. For a coming of age movie, he had no real aspirations to pursue to help him come of age - other than trying to get the girl. My $.02.

I recently saw a commercial for an suv that was all about geocaching....it showed how the suv handled off road and the people jumped out with a gps found a cache jumped in and then cached inside a giant airplane hanger....I seen it one time it was pretty cool

Yah! I like how they replaced the cache at the end of the commercial by just pitching off a cliff into a flooded quarry. <_<

is Splinterheads the best one so far of the listed films ?

with geocaching in them ?

we saw it last night, and we liked it, offcourse there are a few things we found odd geocacher wise,

but hey, it is what it is. To a muggler they understand the main point of the game, and the fun,

and maybe they even go look at the web site and find one them self.

I found the movie to be rather forgettable. Not bad. Just well, forgettable. I'm hoping the next time I drink tequila the brain cell where that memory is stored will exfoliate. :anibad:

I had always regretted not attending the Premier, after GW7, in favor of dinner and caching with friends which included the infamous roadside flashmob fiasco. Now that I have seen the movie, I'm very happy I made the right choice.

It's seems that fictionalized geocaching stories are only interesting when there is a body count. Probably because geocaching is only interesting to other geocachers when it is a true, or very nearly true, first hand account of an actual geocaching experience. Otherwise it's about as interesting as watching golf.

If you guys think there isn't a film that is mainly about geocaching and portrays it well, why doesn't someone make one? I'm sure there Ida geocaching filmmaker out there, and lots of geocachers that would be happy to help out as actors and behind the scenes...

Someone starts a project like this, and you could have a great movie in 4-5 yrs...

There's one more u can add to the list of movies that Geocache. It's called The Survival Game, and they just don't mention the word they DO IT and explan it WELL. Way to go Geocaching, way to go

I added "The Survival Game(s)" to my watch list. Here is a "review". Looks bad but I can't imagine it is worse than Are You Scared 2. :anibad:

Well, it's been 3 years since I started this thread and only 1 movie has been added to the list. Clearly there's not a lot of movie makers interested in adding Geocaching as a plot point. There are two reasons for this. The first is that we have better things to do... like running off into the woods to find cleverly hidden boxes. The second reason is that once you get past the description and ubiquitous FTF race... geocaching is pretty darn boring to watch. Think about your favorite find ever. Now imagine there's a few cameras rolling, perfect lighting, an epic score and you are being portrayed by Hollywood's sexiest young star. If you spend more than 30 seconds looking for the cache you STILL lost your audience. It just doesn't translate well as the audience isn't getting any fresh air, didn't just enjoy an invigorating hike and, most importantly, doesn't care if you find it. Fantastic locations would help but are difficult to film. I'd love to hide a truly epic multi all over Yosemite and then film a multi-team FTF hunt. But that would be VERY HARD to do. Indie film makers are just blokes like us who don't mind taking the easy route. Drop a few flyers by the local acting schools/universities borrow some money from Uncle Muggle and then have a blast getting drunk on "the set" and trying to hook-up with the lead actress. Most cachers I know aren't obsessive enough to make a great movie. Those few that do have the obsessive gene are too busy racking up numbers to be bothered with finding just the right cinematographer. B) Edited by ericles
