Isle of Wight

Recommended Posts

I apologise in advance if this question has already been asked.

We will be travelling to the Isle of Wight for a period of 4 days. Can anyone suggest any must do geocaches whilst we are there? Currently we are undecided on which caches we will attempt.

These geocaches could be because of their sneakiness or personal favourites.

Many thanks for any help.

I've always fancied the ones at the Needles - one of which is int he NT museum there.

I happened to be looking yesterday as I may be able to get a day across there in the next fortnight. There are a number by the Isle of Wight Geocaching project that have good looking containers and I think they'd be fairly high up my list as well - see here

I went to IoW aged 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 (summers either side of 1st year at school) - fairly clear memories of Tennyson Down, Alum Cove, Blackgang Chine, our cottage in Freshwater Bay... and on the ferry over, our Labrador regurgitating a whole dead squirrel he'd eaten at the Hog's Back on the way down. Ah, family holidays!

Anyway - now I have a son of similar age (with 1000+ caches to his name), looking to revisit, see if Blackgang Chine is still naff and of course do some caching - May half term, coinciding with OS Junior's 6th birthday. Looking forward to it and will keep an eye on this thread.

I would suggest if you can to try to get more than a day on the Island.

Parking at the Needles will cost several pounds unless you are a NT member the Fort equally has a charge so is worth spending time there.

There are some reasonable caches to seek but routes between them are not particularly fast.

Go for as long as you can.

I would usually - having grown up until the age of 8 on the Island it's always the 70s there as far as I can tell. But this time we're in the New Forest/Southampton so it can only be a day. It is a very lovely place - although I never had a dog so my memories don't quite match Oxford Stone's :-)

I would definitely go and visit Culver Down, Sandown and search for 'Arbeia', GC4EY0W. We found this one back in May 2014 on a glorious day. We ate our picnic lunch up on the downs, a beautiful walk and we had a big keychain trackable to drop off...this cache was able to help us :-) I grew up on the Isle of Wight and always have an amazing time there. Unfortunately there are not many big routes to do...they seem to be spread out quite a bit but lots of drive bys :-) Have fun :-) xxx

The unknown series with references to well known people who lived or came from the island is good, also if you are church micro collectors why not clear the island (for now) & last but not least the cave at Freshwater! ☺☺☺☺

Off to IoW on Monday, staying in Shanklin. I've saved the Arbeia recommendation above; Brading Box is a Month Hidden needed and there's a date hidden I need in Shanklin too (random nature of caching that I can find over 2200 caches and none hidden on 27 July). That will be date hidden 360/366, and on the Jasmer month hidden grid I'll be down to 8 gaps between 2002-2005, with all done 2006 onwards but obviously loads needed earlier.

We're planning to go to Alum Bay / Needles and Blackgang Chine and will grab anything quick round there / near the B&B. Looking forward to it!

Back from IoW, enjoyed ourselves, grabbed 9 caches - 5 in Shanklin just mooching around, 2 in Brading (House and Box - Box is an unexpected oasis, House is a cheeky one!) and 2 up on Culver / Bembridge Down as recommended. Great views. Went to Alum Bay but omitted to do the earth cache - shocking I know but it was really holiday first, caching second. What a weirdo, eh?!?

It was nice to deliver a starfish TB (found well inland) to the seaside as per its mission and "repatriate" one that wants to be in the Midlands!

Isle of Wight ... The Lord Palmerston GCFA50, Alum Bay (IOW) GC1DG20 and brading house GC1FYVN are the islands three most favoured caches. Have a great trip and my holiday recommendations are Shanklin and Blackgang Chines, the Needles Battery (and the rocket complex around the corner, if you're into that sort of thing), and St Catherine's Down at the south of the island. Happy memories of my 1991 motorcycle holiday there :)

That's great, thank you. I've put those on my watchlist and I'll report back here afterwards!

We went for a day trip to the IoW last summer, we weren't cachers then but we really enjoyed the Needles area so we're definately heading back over there.
