event/labcache

Recommended Posts

So i have posted a lab cache it was found by a friend, and he posted one for me to go find. That being said, i kind of understand how they worked, and how it was to test the thought of having a time sensitive, or find count sensitive cache. I went to an event this weekend and i have two to attend next weekend. I would like to host my own event soon (undecided where/when) but it would most likely be a cito. Now while i was doing this i thought it would be great to make a "lab cache" for the attendees to find, then have it be gone the next day. Currently this would only be possible by publishing, and archiving the day of the event. Just wanted to here any other ideas on having and "event/onedayfind" completelt open to anything. as this would be my first event hosted, possibly of many. I wanted to hear what you all have to say. :drama:

The purpose of those lab caches was to see what we could come up with. If there was a common theme among the lab caches, that would be something they might consider using.

Currently you can't make a lab cache like you are talking about. Now there are some lab caches at the mega events, so if you are expecting 500 people to attend your CITO, then it might be possible.

Now back to you-you want people to come to your event, and be able to log something for that day only. Is there a reason why the smiley from the event is not good enough? And no, you can't place a cache for only one day- permanency guidelines say that you should have the cache up for at least three monthsNot in those exact words though.

Lab caches are available only for mega events (and for special promotions like the I <3 Geocaching promotion last February).

Temporary caches can't be listed on geocaching.com because they violate the cache permanence guideline. Some people hide temporary caches for their events and let people log the event as Attended more than once to count the temporary caches, but this seems to be a regional thing. Some people hide temporary caches for their events, and no one worries about logging them; finding them is just part of the event. Some people hide permanent caches for their events, so attendees will have new caches to find in the area. Some people hide permanent caches for their events, but have them published after the event, so attendees have a chance to get FTF before the caches are available to everyone else. And a lot of people let their events stand on their own, without trying to hide additional caches to lure people into attending their events.

Well i would like it to be a clean up, and then everyone can go find a new cache! i guess it could stay there for 3 months, but i would like the "hunt" to be part of the event also. if this makes sense?

Events are supposed to be about geocaching, not for geocaching. The guidelines explicit prohibit holding events for the purpose of finding geocaches. As others suggested you can place a few geocaches associated with the event to entice people to attend (personally I'd rather have an event stand on its own) and ask the reviewer to publish them on the day of the event.

So your going to get rid of the cache in 3 months. Why not just leave it be? Why do you even NEED a cache? Events are not to be held to go geocaching- they won't list that type of event. Yes you could place a cache, but those that want to go find a cache will do so regardless of if it's your new cache or a 4 year old cache.

well i wouldnt get rid of it! i just wanted there to be cleaning AND geocaching, thats why i asked you guys!! so you think the best bet is to have it published the day of? and some of you say to not have one at all? hmmmm both make sense. i did my eagle scout project in '04 in a state park near me, ive been talking to the park ranger about a possible event/project/cleanup soon, but the park is pretty full of caches, so if i do i there i wont have another cache to hide i dont think.
