Can you adopt a archived cache before you replace the container?

No. If the spot is that great, hide a new container and submit a new listing.

If the cache did not belong to you, you should NOT be replacing the container.

 

You should not replace a container for a cache that has been archived.

 

There's not much chance of being able to adopt an archived cache.

 

If you want to put a new cache there, then you will need to go through the steps of placing a new cache. It would need to pass the cache review process, like any other new cache placement.

Why? It would still be archived when you adopt it, so it's really useless to do so. If you want the location, put a new cache there...
