Lockable Cache Containers

Recommended Posts

Hi! I was just wondering if anyone knows of any fairly small (under 6 in. in any direction) containers that can be locked using a normal padlock type lock. Ideally the container would be tube or cylinder shaped, but I'm just having trouble finding ANY locking container that isn't a large ammo can. I would also be willing to modify a small container to make it lockable; anyone have any ideas on how to do that? Thanks a lot!

I've found a few caches that have used combination-lock key safes, the kind used by real estate agents. I've also found a couple that used combination-lock bike chains, with a tiny scroll (like the scrolls used for blinkers) tucked into the lock mechanism somewhere.

An Amazon search shows me a small lockable case for phones and wallets. It has a combo lock, if that would work--Steelmaster lockable iBox at 2.3"x 5.6". There were also a few different portable hide a key containers with combo locks, and a very tiny Masterlock mini safe (there's even a cammo patterned one. People who bought that also bought a wireless geocaching beacon, apparently). They all had cables for hanging, and were in the range of $7-$15.

While not tube shaped, the small exterior boxes that are meant to hold timers for sprinkler or lighting systems are usually designed to accommodate a padlock. While many of the lockable items will not be water resistant, you can use a smaller container inside the lockable that will protect from the weather.

There is a very simple one near where I live.

It's a container within a container.

The inner container has some sort of cord around it and it's all threaded through a combination lock.

The log is only accessible by getting the lock open.

I found it quite some time ago, so the specifics are a bit vague, but it works well.

Oh what a great simple idea...just put a water tight container inside another locked container. The outer container doesn't have to be watertight so a lock can pass through both the box and the lid.

out side of an ammo can, you can always build a box out of wood adding the hardware to make it lock via what ever size lock you have or want to use.

I will be building my own boxes for an upcoming series I am in the proccess of planning out now... some may be locked, some may not, all will have a visable lock on it.
