+scropenoggin
Hello all, hope someone can help with this. My explorist gc is refusing to boot up-it displays the magellan logo and the compass which gets to about 2 o'clock and then stops. That's it! It has been updated (this took ages, and several failed attempts using Mac and 3 versions of windows) and had been working fine-the lock-up has happened after a few days of not being used. I've tried the joystick up / menu button/power button trick with no joy as yet. I suspect that there may well be little else to say, but has anyone else managed to solve this issue? I have to say, the unit is moderately tidy to use, but for me it's outrageous that the update process to 2.15 has been such a mess, and the Mac compatibility issues would prevent me recommending this unit. Back to the old etrex camo for me! Quote Link to comment

+Jayman11
I had a similar issue with the Explorist GC I use, call Magellan. I couldn't even reload the firmware. They ended up swapping me for another unit since it was under warranty. Quote Link to comment
+Glenn
I've tried the joystick up / menu button/power button trick with no joy as yet. What do you mean by no joy as yet? Have you been able to get it in to service menu? If you were able to get to the service menu what did you do to attempt to fix it? Are you following all of these step in this order? 1. Pull the batteries and replace with fresh ones. (If you are sure that you are using new batteries. Remove them, count to 10, then replace them). 2. Connect the usb cable between the GPS and your computer (with the explorist off). 3. Hold menu+up+power and the unit will start up in disk access mode (keep them all pressed in until you get a menu on the screen). If you are having trouble with step 3 one trick is to press menu and up buttons first. Then once you are sure you have both of them pressed, press and hold the power button while continuing to hold the other two buttons. Remember not to let go until after the menu screen appears. 4. Once it starts up, browse the device in the windows explorer (or mac equivalent). 5. Go into Geocaches folder and move all the files in there to your pc (make a folder in your my documents to store them). Double check to make sure that there are no files in the Geocaches folder on the GPS. 6. Go into the Waypoints folder and move all these file as well (keep them separate from the geocache files from above). Double check to make sure that there are no files in the Waypoints folder on the GPS. 7. Eject (safely remove, etc) the GPS and pull the usb plug. The unit will reboot normally. Quote Link to comment

Thank you-I have already tried something similar, but I suspect I wasn't waiting long enough. I'll give it another go- thanks to all, will let you know what happens! Quote Link to comment
+scropenoggin
Ok, have just tried to get into the service menu by doing the up joystick/menu/power on combination-have held this for 10seconds with no joy-the compass thing stops at 10past and that's it. It doesn't get far enough to be recognised as a disk. It had been working perfectly! I can't think of anything else to try, but I'll not give up totally-it's not a bad unit when it's working. Thank you to everyone who has tried to help, if you have anything else to add I'll happily give it a go! Quote Link to comment
+Glenn
I just tried pressing MENU+UP+POWER on my eXp GC and guess what. It didn't work. A played around a bit and discovered something. If you are using version 2.15 of the firmware they changed the procedure a bit. You now have to push the joystick to the left. Give MENU+LEFT+POWER a try. The other steps should be the same. I'm fairly certain it's out of warranty, and don't have any paperwork for it in any case, so I'll have to grin and bear it I guess. Thanks for all the input, I'll post here if anything else transpires. Quote Link to comment

I' ll think very carefully before buying magellan again. Quote Link to comment
