open street maps

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to download a open street map of my state to the 62s? Will it have to be on sd card or direct to device? Would file be too large to go direct to device? Just getting into geocaching and have a lot to learn. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Here is a YouTube video that helped me when I did the same task with my new 62S the other day. (Despite the video's title, there's a lot of content specific to OSM installation.)

I installed about half the USA map tiles onto a 16 gig micro SD card with plenty of room to spare, so one state should be no problem. I don't know about installing to internal memory - it might depend on which state you had in mind.

The 62s has 3.6 Gb of internal memory so there's plenty of room for your state, or a good part of the entire U.S. for that matter. The map file(s) go(es) in the Garmin folder either internally or on a card in the Garmin folder.

The 62S has 1.7 GB of internal memory

I tried to install maps to the SD card but they were dreadfully slow.

Got it loaded. Nice map. Now just need topo and be set. Where is best site for topo?

Have you looked at gpsfiledepot.com. One nice thing thing about the OSM maps that you loaded is that the trail information is often very helpful, so I find myself using it a lot.

Edited to add that if you load another map, be sure that the original map is not overwritten. Your 62s supports renaming, so to avoid any problems I rename the maps so that they are not the generic "gmapsupp.img."
