Earl100
What does it mean to download to my GPS? I have a Garmin GPS suitable for use in a car, but I've never heard of downloading to it. Am I out of luck? Quote Link to comment
+Chrysalides
What does it mean to download to my GPS? I have a Garmin GPS suitable for use in a car, but I've never heard of downloading to it. Am I out of luck? Downloading to GPS (used here) means transferring the coordinates (and details, if you have Premium membership) automatically to your GPS receiver. Usually this would be a paperless unit if you want details. Almost all handheld units allow you to transfer coordinates and names to it. If you have a Garmin car unit (like a Nuvi) it takes a bit more work. You can transfer as a bunch of Favorites waypoint, or you can create a custom Points of Interest file. Both takes a bit of work, and involves the use of additional software. I'm not sure if the "Send to GPS" plugin works for Nuvi as I haven't tried it. Quote Link to comment
+kunarion
I'm not sure if the "Send to GPS" plugin works for Nuvi as I haven't tried it. Yes, "Send To" works as well as with a handheld GPSr (with the same learning curve, necessary settings, etc.). You can place the Loc or GPX file directly into the "Garmim/GPX" folder of a modern Nuvi, and delete that later if you like. Nuvis are all quite different. Mine lists a cache by GC number, and if I select that POI, the cache name appears. The cache page details don't show at all. With some Nuvis, it's simple to download a GPX file, but the Nuvi makes it a POI which is extra work to delete later. A Nuvi is for car navigation. It depends on the specific model whether it will be good for use as a hiking GPSr once you arrive at the parking spot. It is much easier to use a hiking GPSr for Geocaching. I once used my Nuvi to find two caches, and could hardly stand it. I much prefer my Oregon. Edited November 18, 2014 by kunarion Quote Link to comment
