There are many caches available to regular members, there is no need to pay for premier membership in order to play but it does provide some extra caches (depending on where you are in the world) and extra features. To utilize the paperless geocaching features of your GPS you will need the premium membership. Without it you can only download LOC files not the far more informative GPX files. I believe Groundspeak (owner/operator of Geocaching.com) still offers a free 1 month premium membership when you inform them of your new GPS. If not, you can get a 3 month version for $10. Either of these memberships will let you better decide if want the year long subscription. But to reiterate whe whh0 said, you can geocache using just the coordinate information that the LOC files provide. Quote Link to comment
