Things to include in your profile's 'bio' section

Hello all. My account's pretty new and I was wondering what sort of statistics or information it might be interesting to include in my profile's 'bio' section. What sort of things do you folks like to write?

 

For example, I've seen veteran 'cachers with long lists of their FTFs, their milestones, the events they've attended, etc.

What information do you want to share with other geocachers? What information do you like seeing on other geocachers' profiles?

 

Personally, I don't care much for long lists of stats. I'd rather see a paragraph or three about who the person is.

This user insight thread about profile information may give you some ideas. But what do you find interesting, what do you want people to know about you? I stay away from public statistics and have never used the FTF initials when signing the log on a new cache, so I concentrated on places I have been, caches that I found most noteworthy, and some of my interests.

Many folk use either GSAK or project-gc to generate their stats.

 

GSAK (the Geocaching Swiss Army Knife) is a database management program specifically designed to handle geocaching statistics. It has a steep learning curve and I know of people who have given up on it. If you are persistent it does have lots of features to make caching easier. My profile is done with GSAK.

 

Project-gc I know less about but others will chime in I'm sure.

 

Alternatively, just include stuff about yourself. Put in whatever makes you happy.

Like others have mentioned, tell me about yourself and your geocaching goals or thoughts. If I'm interested, I will look at your stats.

I had actually forgotten what I wrote in my bio, so I went back to check! Apparently I just put in when I started geocaching and what my geocaching goals are.

 

When I look at other people's bios, I like to see a paragraph or two about geocaching: what got them into it, what sort of caches are their favorites, what they like best about it, etc. And I'm always interested to learn what else they're into outside of geocaching, too. I'd suggest looking at other people's bios to get a feel for what's out there and then write whatever you'd like to share. Stats are cool but there is a special part of everyone's profile specifically for them - your bio can be about YOU.

I have a little write-up on who I am and that's what I like to see on other cachers' pages.

 

My stats are done by mygeocachingprofile.com; it's very easy.

 

Edited: I went back and read my profile and see that I didn't really write that much about who I am--ok that's on my to-do list: write a bit more about myself.

I suggested this in the User Insights forum. One of the reasons that people include stats and other info in their bio section is because it's the only section in the forum that allows editing and the inclusion of html.

 

If the statistic tabs were editable such that people could integrate stats from apps/sites such as GSAK, project-gc, mygeocachingprofile, etc. then the bio section could just be used for biographical information.

 

Personally, I don't see stats as "bragging about what they've done". It's a just a visual statement of fact.

Make sure you can be contacted - if you have caches or find caches or take TB's the one thing that infuriates people is not being able to email or message you to ask something.

 

Nothing else is as important as that. But also don't put it like some sort of seminar briefing note lol.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm finding all this "I did this cache!" bling that covers profile pages (many animated) really annoying.

Just yesterday I looked at another's profile.

- So much flashy carp that I poured a coffee and back before the page loaded.

Hoping that user insights suggestions get that fixed with a separate stats page.

From what I understand that "I did this cache" bling is fairly common in Europe but pretty rare in the U.S. The user insights thread specifically mentioned these sort of "badges" and as you (and I) suggest creating a separate, editable tab for them would move them off the "Bio" page.

The nice thing is that you can change it. You can change it daily if you'd like. You can change it as you grow and your experiences with geocaching change.

Something along the line of when you discovered and started caching, what kinds of caches you like to find, your favorite caching experience, your other likes, etc,, are what i like to see. Some basic stats are fine but a long winded, sounds almost like bragging to me, list of every stat in the book doesn't interest me at all.
