EarthCaches in NJ State Parks

Caches in New Jersey State Parks require a permit from the state park service. Over four hundred caches have been archived for not having the permit or not having the permit displayed on the cache page.

Does this apply to EarthCaches as well?

Earthcaches have required explicit permission in the majority of situations for quite some time. That being said, a Land Manager can always remove permission at any time, and contact Groundspeak regarding Archival.

 

From the Guidelines, and that particular portion of the Guidelines has changed very little over the years:

 

EarthCaches must have approval from the Land Manager prior to submission (depending on local laws and customs). The name, title, and contact details of the person that authorized the EarthCache must be included in a Reviewer Note. Otherwise, information about the type of land, and the reasons why permission may not be required, must be included in a Reviewer Note.

We have to have a permit on file here in Tennessee State Parks for EarthCaches. The permit is good for one year.

As I understand, a geocache permit is required for a virtual or other cache type.

It appears so. Even Waymarking may require a permit.

If you look at the New Jersey wiki, the state park and forest policy seems pretty broad and covers caches and containers. They don't mention earthcaches, but they do mention virtuals.

 

I did find one virtual on state forest land that has been disabled due to lack of a permit, so yes, the policy would appear to apply to earthcaches as well.

 

It doesn't look like enforcement on existing caches is exactly uniform, though. There are ten earthcaches in a row at Liberty State Park, and none comply with the permit policy.

Correct, we only do what the parks tell us to do. So far, no one in that area has said to do anything about them so I ignore the caches up there.

Well, sure. No reason to pull the trigger on it unless/until they make that call -- it's the parks' and forests' rule to enforce.

Why were they archived? The virtual there appears that the owner is inactive, and effort has been made to preserve it, if the CO complys to the new requirement.

 

I still fail to see why that virtual is any different than any of the other virtual EarthCaches, they are all virtual cache types.

Which Virtual are you referring to? I just recently visited Liberty State Park and wasn't aware of any Virtuals or I would have done it, and I can't see any when looking at the map today.
