Garmin Gpsmap 60cs

Recommended Posts

I thought I'd start a thread for just the 60CS; it seems like there's a whole bunch of others, so this might make it easier to track.

I just got mine the 28th and haven't had a chance to cache yet, but I have been playing with it and so far I'm crazy about it.

I also own a Magellan SporTrakMap. It pales in comparison. It almost always tells me I'm 50'-60' from the cache when I'm actually much closer than that.

I to just got my 60cs on the 28th :-) My question is how do you download the way points into the geocaching page only? Im using easygps to download my way points, But it seems that when you download waypoints it goes to the waypoint page great. Once I change the Icon for geocaching they show up on the geocahcing page as well. Now I have the waypoints on two different pages. If you try to delet the waypoints they delet on both pages WHY!!!!! Can't you just download to the geocaching page only? Does anybody out there know the little trick that IM over looking? Thank for all the support.

:( Yes. when you download them to Easygps, change the icon in Easygps first to the closed treasure chest for each waypoint then upload them to your GPS. This will place them in your Geocaching page and not in the waypoint page. Happy caching. :D

Just something a few of us Utah Cachers were wondering about, and I figured out today. I am sure most of you fine folks have already managed this, but in case you have not....

If you have multiple Mapsource software packages, you can load more than one into the 60CS. Anyone who DOESN'T know how to do this, post here, and I will post the instructions on how to do it here. For example, I have Mapsource Topo and City Select. I want the databases and detailed mapping for both. So how do you have both of them in your GPS, since with each new upload, it erases the old mapset?

Link to comment

Ok, someone has already asked me about uploading from multiple map suites, so here goes.

1) Open up your Mapsource Topo AND your CitySelect software on your desktop.

2) Select the Topo maps you want, and copy them (CTRL+C)

3) Go into CitySelect (The two Mapping suites use the same browser)

4) Select the maps you want in City Select (There are a lot less of them than there are in Topo.)

5) Right click in the area where you now see the names of the CitySelect maps you are uploading, and click PASTE. This adds all the TOPO maps you copied to the CitySelect maps you just selected.

6) Upload as usual.

Essentially, what you are doing is taking the map/database data from TOPO and merging it with CitySelect. It just occurred to me that this might work, had I read the instructions more thoroughly, I am sure it would have talked about this.

It is quite nice, and switching from Topo to CitySelect doesn't seem to be a big deal. You have databases in each that are not in the other, and all the data for both software suites are displayed in the FIND menu together. Obviously you will not be able to carry as large an area as you could if you just loaded one or the other. I loaded all of Utah, plus about 50 miles around the perimeter, and had plenty of room to spare. You can also have SOME of the Topos and SOME of the CitySelect displayed on the map screen, but I have found that displaying the CItySelect gives more data around town.

Another difference is that TOPO shows considerable more of the backroads and streams (which makes sense) and CitySelect does not have these data at all.

Anyway, There you have it. Hopefully my instructions are coherent enough to make sense to everyone. If not, feel free to e-mail me or just post here with any questions.

Wrong Way,

Don't try to load geocaching to only one page. I don't think you can. Just think of the "geocache" option as a built in filter for a portion of your stored waypoints. After you find a cache and click "Find", the icon will change to the "found geocache" open container symbol. At that point, it will no longer be part of the unfound geocache list but will be on the list of all waypoints as a Found Geocache.

If you really think there is a separate list, how many geocaches do you think the 60CS can store? Why isn't this limit in the documentation? It is helpful to remember that this is software and what you get is what was built, not what you think *should* be there.

I've been playing with my 60CS for a couple of months and it is a real joy. I have 3 other GPS' (emap, forerunner, and etrex legend) but the 60 is so much more advanced.

Maybe information from this thread will go to a 60CS FAQ's.

To reset the trip odometer, go to the odometer page and press "menu". Then highlight reset and press "enter". Now you can select or deselect what you want or don't want to have reset.

To clear tracks, select "Tracks" from the main menu page. Then highlight "clear" and press enter. It takes a few seconds to clear.

Ensure that the prompt is turned on by going to the main menu. Highlight "set-up" and press "enter". Highlight "Routing" and press enter. Highlight "Guidance Method" and ensure "prompted" is selected. Now each time you hit go to a waypoint or geocache, you will be prompted for off road or follow road. If you select follow road and then want to switck to off road you have to go back and enter on go to again for that item so that you'll be prompted again.

Hope this helps.

1. Reset Odometer:

Go to the Trip Computer page (hit page until you get there)

Press Menu

Choose Reset

Choose which field you'd like to reset

Scroll down to 'Apply'

Press Enter.

2. Delete Tracks:

Once on the 'Tracks' page:

To clear the log:

Scroll to "Clear"

Press Enter

Choose Yes

Press Enter

To delete all saved tracks:

Press Menu

Scroll to 'Delete All Saved'

Press Enter

Choose Yes

Press Enter

To delete a specific track:

Scroll to the specific track you want to delete

Press Enter

Scroll to Delete

Press Enter

Choose Yes

Press Enter

3. Switching between on & off road:

When you're navigating a go-to, press Menu. Recalculate may be one of your choices if you're on the compass page or the map page. If it's not highlighted out, you can select it from that point and it will then ask you if you want to recalculate on or off road. Choose which one you want and press Enter.

If you can't choose 'Recalculate', I press 'Find-Find' which then gets me back to my "Recent Finds" page. Odds are usually high that the cache I want to recalculate my distance to is right at the top (if not, find it in the list). Scroll to where you're going, press Enter, scroll to GOTO and press Enter. If you've set up your options correctly in your setup (Menu-Menu-Setup-Routing-PROMPTED) you'll once again be given the choice as to whether you want to navigate on or off road.

Most of this stuff is EASILY figured out if you just sit down and play with your GPSr. If you think there should be options, there most likely are. Press 'menu' at any given point and see what you can do.

Also, you CAN search through many of the past forum posts, starting in late-January to see what's been going on with the 60C/S since that time. 99.9% of the posts involving the 60C are also VERY applicable to using the 60CS. The only thing different is the comp/baro/alt and their assorted settings.

I tried for a day and a half, got impatient, and decided to post the questions.

Thanks for the info. I got it done except for one thing that didn't get answered on another thread. How do you determine what firmware version you have?

OK< Finally found it. (It was a bit confusing because you didn't say when to poke "Enter"). I'm one of those "Literal" type of people. I may be slow sometimes, but I usually get there.

Anyway, my ver. is 3.20. Is that the most current?

Has anybody else noticed the little compass icon that lives up top next to the "3D" icon comes and goes at will? I keep mine turned "on", but it doesn't always show up.

You can set it so that if you are moving it uses the GPS as a compass, and as soon as you are below a set speed limit compass is turned on.

It took me forever to figure out how to use the Geocache page. It kept asking me to set it up and when I tried to "Find" a cache, none were listed. I realized that I had to change the blue flag icon to a closed box. I soon got tired of changing them in the GPS and used the new version of EasyGPS to do it. It has a lot more icon choices than before. Is there a easier way to do this?

I have GSAK, but it doesn't even have icons as far as I can see.

Use gpx and not loc files from geocaching.com (requires premium membership) and you will get them with the correct cache icon. I download the gpx file directly through EasyGPS to my 60CS without modification and it works like a charm.

I guess if I can afford a new 60CS, I can afford Premium Membership. I'm such a cheapskate sometimes. :)

I bought the Premium membership before I got the 60CS. It seems like an almost necessary tool to go Geocaching.

I have a question about the 60c/cs. Lets say you set up a route that consists of 4 points--A, B, C, and D. If you drew a route from A to D, it would not go through B and C. So you start, go from A to B and decide you really don't need to go to C. is there a way to tell it to skip C and go on to D?

Thanks

You don't really need to create routes with an auto-routing GPS. You would just Go To Waypoint where the waypoint is A, B, C or D. So you can Go to Waypoint A, then Go to Waypoint B, then go to C or D.

Now you can manually create a route if you like, but you certainly don't have to. If you manually create a route (at least on my GPS V), I could edit the route and remove Waypoint C if I wanted.

:bad: SATELLITE PAGE QUESTIONS:

1. What is the little circle silver with red dot bug that travels around the outer ring with N/S/E/W? Does it represent the sun location or what?

2. Once in a while, one of the satellite bars has a "D" on it? Is it related to WAAS?

This stuff appears to be undocumented in owner's manual.

Thx.

Been there...

1. I do believe this is accurate. I just booted mine up quickly, double-checked with my traditional compass and that's precisely where the sun was.

2. Yes. the D is the WAAS satellite. I normally pick up 35 here in Texas.

1. The circle with the red dot is your direction of travel. Yes it moves around when standing still because GPSR commercial units are not exact. If you were moving and come to a stop it will remain pointing in the direction you were traveling unless due to the previously mentioned GPS accuracy it thinks you have moved in another direction.

2. The 'D' stands for timing differential. This means you received a timing differential update on that specific satellite. The regular GPSRs owned by us in the public sector typically only receive this update through a signal sent from the WAAS satellites. You can receive a timing differential update on any of the satellites that you are currently receiving. WAAS Satellites are any satellite you are receiving with a number of 33 or higher.

On a recent trip near Tacoma, WA I picked up both WAAS satellites and differential signals for nearly all 10 of the other satellites I was receiving. It was the first time I had ever seen that sort of reception and accordingly the highest accuracy I ever saw at 6 feet.

Here's a couple pages explaining WAAS in more detail.

Also here's a link to the manual for the Garmin Vista. It's a .PDF manual. Check out page 5 it explains the 'D' and what numbers are WAAS satellites.

The red dot on the outer ring of the satellite page is a directional pointer...it does not point to where the sun is. Since the outer ring on the satellite display does not rotate in relation to your heading, this red dot moves along the outer ring instead. Stand to the north and the red dot will be aligned with the N on the outer ring. Stand to the west and the red dot will be aligned with the W on the outer ring.

Anybody have an problems downloading waypoints using EasyGPS? When using the USB cable I capture about three or four waypoints from the receiver and then I get an error 22. Communication error. I have the lastest versions of software on both. I have no problems sending data to the unit.

Thanks

I have City Navigator, for use on my Streetfinder III with auto routing; will the auto routing features of the software work with the 60cs? Is this a licensing no-no?

It should work but I don't think Garmin directly supports it. You would have to get an unlock code for the 60CS and you are only permitted two GPS unlock codes for City Navigator.

On a side note I went trekking through the woods with my 60CS the other night. Heavy Oregon forest. I didn't lose signal but once when I dropped the unit down by my side. Most of the time it was maintaining 25-30 foot accuracy. My Vista even with the PC-Mobile re-radiating antenna would not maintain lock in those woods were I was at. I was needless to say very impressed.

And worse now, I've read through the posts and discovered that my software was not the most current version. I thought I downloaded properly, but now the 60CS says "LOADER", and I cannot get off that screen or even turn the unit off. What have I done?

Ummm - nevermind. I apparently was impatient and disconnected before the download was complete. I have fixed this problem.

Got my 60c in the mail today! I upgraded from a Legend and find this model far superior. Hard to believe only a couple of years ago I paid over $250 for the Legend and I just got this outstanding unit for just $350! BTW, I don't know if this is the place for this or not, but I got it from JJI Eletronics, for only $7.50 worth of shipping they got it to me in just 3 days! Anyway, playing with the unit quite a bit and find this group very helpful even though I only have the 60c! The compass and the barometer didn't really seem worth the extra $$$, besides, you can get a compass for next to nothing.

The screen is fantastic as well on this unit, I thought I would have a hard time seeing it in direct sunlight, but it still looks good! Sorry, just got it so I am rambling on! Read all of your questions and they helped quite a bit. The one thing that was a little odd was the way it handles geocaches. I thought they would be seperated somehow and you would bring up the screen when you found them. From the directions it looks as if you are shown the 'found' screen only after you get close enough to the cache. Is this correct?
