SOLANO COUNTY, Calif. —A prize from a scavenger hunt looked like a possible bomb to highway work crews, and prompted the California Highway Patrol to shut down Highway 12 at Interstate 80 near Fairfield on Tuesday afternoon, a CHP officer said.

A Caltrans crew working along the highway found a tube affixed with magnets and tape to a streetlight pole at 12:24 p.m., CHP Officer Chris Parker said.

The CHP responded and could not identify the device. As a precaution, the highway was closed as well as westbound I-80 at Red Top Road.

The Napa County sheriff's bomb squad used water to dislodge it from the light pole, Parker said.

The bomb squad determined that it was a tube affixed to the pole for a Geocaching game -- a scavenger hunt-like game where players are directed to a prize or further instructions through GPS coordinates, Parker said.

He was not sure what the tube contained. The roadways reopened by 3 p.m., CHP official.

My best guess:

GC58K78 End of the Road! Red Top Road

Wonder if they replaced it as found?

And I am sure they had permission to place that cache on the privately owned utility pole, right?

Grrrr... this one always irritates me. I asked the town park about setting a cache out near a pretty spot, planning on making a puzzle based off the "historical plaque" in the park for the final cache. Got a lovely email and everything back to allow it (but I was on vacation).

Got back, Poof, micro appears on fence before I returned home. Park thought it was mine and was surprised it wasn't. I explained, no, mine was moved outside 500m radius to ____. Alas. :)

Guidelines, people, they are there for a reason!

Shut down 2 highways? Yikes. How close was this to those overpasses/intersections?

My best guess:

GC58K78 End of the Road! Red Top Road

From the cache page:

We used to have a fun cache hidden near here, but it disappeared. Hopefully this one will stick around a lot longer!

Guess that explains magnets AND tape.

Sounds like the law enforcement folks aren't really clear on what geocaching is.

A cacher local to us moved away and I adopted some of his caches. I went to each one to check the containers and logsheets and fix them up. Before I got to a park where some were located I recieved a message that a cacher had talked to the park ranger and was told that a container with camo tape (pill bottle) and wire(coat hanger type) was found in the roots of a tree and they called the police and blew it up. When I found out it was one of the ones I adopted I contacted the park rangers and explained I had only just adopted it and will replace it with something less harmful looking. I think that episode left a bad taste in their mouths
