+Matt Tracker 1
Hello! I often find ammo can containers and they seem very durable (as well as waterproof!) I was just wondering if anyone knows a cheap place to buy them or whatever. Cheers Quote Link to comment
+T.D.M.22
I have never heard of a cheap ammo can. Best place to he them is from the source. You local army base should do. They all seem to be around the $20 mark, yet I can remember even 4 years ago them being $10. And those are normal 30cal not the big .50, or SAW cans. Honestly they are a hot item among many groups, so places that sell them will always be more expensive than a place that happens to have a few for sale. You should search online "ammo can for sale" or try cheaperthandirt.com Quote Link to comment
+Just Roger
I don't think rolling up at your local army base asking for ammo boxes in this country would get you anywhere except in deep trouble as a terrorist suspect. I have often seen them in the Militaria stalls in Antique centers. As far as I recall they are around the £8 mark Quote Link to comment
+Armsey
Around £8 and £5 in postage, this site looks respectable. http://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/shop/army-surplus-uk/army-miscellaneous/excellent-condition-genuine-u-234941.html Quote Link to comment

They have (had, a while ago) a little habit of 'going for a walk' from their hiding place. It almost makes sense to make it an Unknown/Puzzle cache or a Multi-cache, just to keep it in place. Anyway if the UK military acts like they do here, empty ammo cans leaving the base isn't the worst thing that does ( I live near a British base.) Quote Link to comment
+GilkerscleughCachers
A good place to go would be an army surplus store. I'm not sure if they are still relevant but with the withdrawal of troops from Afganistan, there could be an influx of ammo cans being sold to raise funds. Quote Link to comment

Yeah, it's been a few years since I've done caching, but I've been going through a few old logs of old caches I've found in the past (which most of which are now archived.) Seems a shame, they are sometimes the most interesting caches! Quote Link to comment
+Delta68
Although a many cacher seem to think ammo boxes are the only 'proper' cache container very few of the oldest caches are or ever were ammo boxes. Some even got 'upgraded' to ammo boxes at a later date. Also, they frequently aren't particularly waterproof either. Having said that, they are great and there's nothing quite like finding a 50cal box after a long walk and sitting down to examine the contents M Quote Link to comment
+Happy Humphrey
Yes, they are great but not that waterproof or robust (the hinges rust and break, and they often rust up so you can't open them: they need annual maintenance). Army surplus online stores are the place. But a good lock'n'lock box in a camo bag will easily outlast an ammo box. Quote Link to comment
