Hamilton Geochacing

Hi everyone,

I'm brand new to geocaching and LOVE it. I already hijacked a family hike to look for two caches on a portion of the Bruce Trail in Grimsby, ON (only found one, and the other site had old barbed wire on it, so didn't want to spend too much time at it). I've gone ahead and dived in headfirst, ordering a bunch of containers and tools to start hiding some around my area of Hamilton, Ontario. I've been looking at local caches and there doesn't seem to be too much activity on them recently. Are there many users in the Hammer?

Thanks everyone!!!

Hi Howie

Sometimes it helps to check out nearby events - or even host one yourself! We are moving back to Ontario (not specifically Hamilton) but expect we are going to have to do a little searching for caching groupies.

Recommendations:

Buy quality water tight containers. Go to Sears or Walmart and look for authentic Lock & Lock. There's a Lock & Lock embossed seal on the lid. The palm size 100ml size is a nice size for hiding and you should get at least 3-5 years of life out of it, the tabs will stay on.

Don't buy cheap knock-off dollar store quality containers. They are leaky. Tabs break off. Most don't have gaskets or the gaskets at cheap plastic which don't seal well.

Hide swag size so people can leave/trade trackables and signature items, and it will be more fun for families with kids.

Get good coordinates. Use a GPS or good gps app. Take multiple readings at different times of the day or different days for best accuracy.

If you do not want to provide a hint, leave the hint section blank....don't write: 'Contact me for a hint', or 'No hint necessary'.

Be a good example, and take care of your cache and cache listing. Monitor your emails. Be prepared to address any issues within about 4 weeks or at least disable or leave a note to explain why it may take you longer to check your cache(s).

Read the Help Center information. These are especially important:

Cache containers explained

Container sizes

Ratings for difficulty and terrain (D/T)

Cache review process

Check for minimum distance

Hi I will be visiting Hamilton this coming weekend. I'm new to geocaching just started a couple of months ago. Any suggestions on any must hit caches in the area where I might be able to hide a couple of TBs? Unfortunately I probably won't be able to spend to long hunting. Any favorites you can suggest will be helpful or even a TB Hotel in the area would be good. Thanks.
