+Inukshuk and Arwen
We're starting a new project in the mag and we need your help! We want to Geograph the UK! To do this we want to collect photographs of every square kilometre (by ordnance survey grid reference) of the country. You could be the first to bag a square by sending in your photo and you'll be remebered for eternity because your caching name will be entered next to each grid reference for which you provide the first photograph! We hope you'll take part in this project and that it will add an interesting extra dimension to your caching. Geograph The page is still under development but ultimately each grid square will link to a new page containing a photo for each square kilometer and a table referencing squares to the cachers who supplied the photo! thanks and best wishes Inukshuk Quote Link to comment

+Pengy&Tigger
Can i stand on the exact crossover of four squares and claim four? But could you if you pointed the camara NW NE SW & SE???? Quote Link to comment
davester
No! (there's always one! ) Gutted. I was being serious. Four squares converge on our driveway. Quote Link to comment
barryhunter
Wow, thats about 240,000 grid squares! I've wondered about something similar before, taking the idea from confluence.org, but put off from the shear size of the project Although would be interesting to see a picture build up, and watch the progress spread around the UK. Can put together a number of photos, which I will send... Barry Quote Link to comment
+Inukshuk and Arwen
No! (there's always one! ) Gutted. I was being serious. Four squares converge on our driveway. No problem! As P and T suggest, just turn around and take four pics! best wishes Inuk Quote Link to comment

+Birders
It's apparentl a "new" project but the page suggests that only SD squares are available. Does that mean everywhere else has been done? Quote Link to comment
+Seasider
It's apparentl a "new" project but the page suggests that only SD squares are available. Does that mean everywhere else has been done? No, it means Gary lives in Billinge just yards north of the SD/SJ border! Well, since I'm well into SD I'll see what I can do. A photo of Blackpool on a Saturday night could well be interesting! Cheers! Seasider Quote Link to comment
SlytherinAlex
How many COTM points is each photo worth? < ducks and runs for cover...... > Quote Link to comment
+Bekandian
Questions: 1. What are your restrictions in regards to file size and image dimensions? 2. If the centre-point isn't inaccessible, do you want photos as close to the centre as is available? 3. Will the photographer retain copyright on the image? Quote Link to comment
+Inukshuk and Arwen
Thanks for the questions: each image should be less than 2mb and no larger than 10x8 inches and sent as a jpeg or similar file - ie NOT embedded in a word doc. A brief note is needed about the pic with date, grid ref and ideally a short description. as near the centre point of the grid square as possible ideally but as long as the main subject of the picture reflects the nature of the grid square thats ok. regarding copyright - i need to be able to use the images freely on the website. I'm not looking for master photography, its just for fun. If copyright is an issue to you, send a picture you're not worried about or don't bother playing! All the UK grid squares will become available soon - but you dont have to wait for them to appear, just take a photo and send it in! Which 100k square would you like to appear next?! !!Its just for fun!! thanks and best wishes Inuk Quote Link to comment
+Inukshuk and Arwen
Many thanks to The Birders for supplying our very first picture covering SU 765 635 ! It will be up on the website later today! keep em coming - one down, 1/4 million or so to go! best wishes Inuk Quote Link to comment
+stu_and_sarah
Looks like fun. I assume you want daytime pics, or are night-time exposures ok? We'll see how much SK we can get done Cheers, Stu Quote Link to comment
+Bekandian
Thanks for that, just need a little clarification. So, photos should be no larger than 720x576 @ 72dpi On the question of copyright, it's not an issue, it's just that Bekie is a photographer and needs to keep track of photos she holds copyright of and ones that have had copyright passed on. Am I right in thinking that these photos will become public domain? Looking forward to bombarding you with photos Quote Link to comment
+stu_and_sarah
Just had a look at the site - would it not be clearer to just use 4-figure grid refs, and throw out all those redundant 5s? SK0000, SK0001, SK0002 etc. rather than: SK005005, SK005015, SK005025 I can see why you've used 6 figures - to get near the centre of each square, but it add a lot of clutter to the site. Feel free to ignore me, of course! Cheers, Stu Quote Link to comment
+wildlifewriter
All the UK grid squares will become available soon - but you dont have to wait for them to appear, <Wlw studies map on site...> A small point, but please stop referring to "UK" when what you actually mean is "Great Britain". Thanks. Quote Link to comment

+jochta
Many thanks to The Birders for supplying our very first picture covering SU 765 635 ! It will be up on the website later today! keep em coming - one down, 1/4 million or so to go! best wishes Inuk If you're referring to a OS grid square you should give the coordinates of the SW corner not the centre point... SU 765 635 refers to the small 100m square whose SW corner is at 476500 163500 You should be saying SU7663 in this case. Which is in the 10km square SU76. Note that the OS refer to quarter sheets at 10k mapping, i.e. SU76NE, SU76NW, SU76SE and SU76SW. Each of these sheets are 5km square. For example the 1km square SU7663 is on sheet SU76SE. Good luck, there are a hell of a lot of very empty 1km squares in the UK!! John Quote Link to comment

+rutson
Firstly great idea! This will be really interesting. Second, woooooooaaahhhhhhhhhh, STOP! Like all great ideas that become great things, this one need more planning than it's getting at the moment. I susupect that if you carry on with it like it is now, it will become unmaintainable. I'm presuming that as the pages are appearing one at a time that they are manuall generated static pages? If so, you are going to get bored very quickly. I suggest some sort of php/mysql solution, which really will not take TOO much development. If I wasn't off to Sweden monday, I'd volunteer, I'm sure someone else will. Another suggestion if I may, those areas with no links as yet, why not make them links to multimap/streetmap? Good luck with this project Quote Link to comment
+The Forester
NS9171 duly photographed from dead centre and piccie submitted. I concur with those who have pointed out that kilometre squares are conventionally referred to in four figure grid references, not six. It's normally only Hectares which are given 6fig square numbers and there are 24,475,400 of those in the UK! Will we be able to upload logs directly, as with Geocaching.com, TrigpointingUK, DegreeConfluence et al? 244,475+ logs seems an awful lot to be processed individually and manually! Even if it only takes a minute for the editor of the mag to process each one, working flat out 8 hours a day without a break and working 5 days a week without holidays or caching breaks, it would take a couple of years to process the log entries by hand - and that presumes that each square will only have one submission. Photogenic places and frequently visited places are likely to have many mutiple entries. Cheers, The Forester Quote Link to comment
+Kitty Hawk
Things have moved on since this morning and my grid is now up. Bit late now, it gets dark early down south although the sunset looks nice. I'll give some thought to pretty or unique locations. Adrian Quote Link to comment

+kbootb
I get the feeling this would be a superb GCSE ICT project. There was a comment on the examiners annual report that they wanted to see more on-line database driven solutions! Don't you think it's a bit complicated for GCSE students? MarcB Too complicated for most, I agree, but the examiners are looking for something to really stretch the A* grades and looking for a well rounded solutin using web technologies. I didn't mean to belittle this project, in fact just the opposite. This is a complex project, but really interesting with a well specced goal. Too many of the gifted and talented students end up extending a fairly simple project and get a bit lost in a 'fluffy' ill-defined area where they can't evaluate whether they have met the goal any better than the first draft that they tried to extend. There are a few really able students out there that could pull this off. Quote Link to comment
+ribel
This is a great idea, I'll start on NZ this weekend. Would it be possible to present the 1:25,000 map section on the corresponding page with the photo's, once they are uploaded, so we can see map and pics side by side? Not sure about copyright, but the OS Get-a-map page lets you save each image and has a copyright note embedded. ribel Quote Link to comment
