Thought I should note for our intrepid Mission Trails Regional Park cachers that park rangers have apparently moved a few caches in that area recently (Buffalo Gals MTRP cache, and View With A Vroom, possibly others). Sounds like all they object to is going off-trail; they haven't confiscated the caches, they haven't asked for their removal, they've just moved them closer to the trail. Sounds pretty reasonable to me, though honestly I think you'd have had to go to a lot of effort to trample anything on the way to Vroom, which was in a pretty wide open area.

There are a lot of caches in MTRP already, but if you're thinking of planting a new one, perhaps contacting the rangers would be in order. They seem to be aware of the sport and not opposed to it occurring in the park, and it sounds like they would be willing to work with you and approve a spot. By the same token, it'd be a bad idea to place a cache far off-trail in the area, because the rangers *are* paying attention, they do notice people off-trail, they're pretty strict about it even in areas that don't explicitly seem to forbid it (did any of you see a sign around Buffalo Gals? I didn't...), and if the rangers continually notice us off-trail it might cool their attitude toward us.

The big problem with moving caches, of course, is if the coordinates online don't get updated, people are going to go to the old ones, not find the cache, expand their search area, and do more damage than they would've if the thing had just been there.

I haven't heard of any other specific encounters with the park powers that be in SD.. has anyone else? Has anyone gotten explicit approval for a cache? Been denied same? I've gotten the general impression that it's don't-ask-don't-tell around here, but I could be wrong.

I got a message from the geocache administrators that my JUST HANGING AROUND cache had been disposed of by a ranger out of the Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve - City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department. I couldn't get too upset about it though since the cache was disguised as two tennis shoes hanging on a wire.

I kept a record of how everybody retrieved the shoes from the line if anyone is interested.

I'd be interested. We were the first ones to note it was missing, alas, and it took us forever to figure out what it must have been.

I kept a record of everyone's adventure at the shoes. I was looking forward to seeing how people would get them down. I always envisioned people tying two walking sticks together with their shoelaces. Or maybe they would have something with them to make a lasso with and pull the shoes down. When Tuna wrote that he knocked them down by throwing rocks I was amazed. Is Tuna part Hobbit?

Rwilley - insulation from powerline along with a plastic bag and his son's shoelaces. 8 throws

Jane - figured out it was the shoes but was afraid of being electrocuted.

Mark71Mark - used a branch off a tree and his tippy toes. 1 throw

Vagabond - used his bamboo walking staff, just how long is that thing anyway?

Jnglecat - used two pieces of insulation to fashion a pole. Are there bare electrical wires somewhere? 1 throw straight up and then let them twirl.

Beeque - tied two surveyer stakes together with bootlaces to make a pole. I sure hope the surveyer was done with them! 4 throws total, his second. A friend missed twice.

Tuna threw rocks till it hit one and spun it over. 10 throws to put back, blinded by sun?

Phishaholic used telescoping fishing rod. Bothways?

RepoMan used broom handle tied to stake. 3 throws to put back

Zcat used a big branch he drug with him. Put back using stick. 3 throws

RC_Glider_Guy tried a putter with son on shoulders, then long branch, Went to plan C and started throwing rocks at the higher shoe to make it swing over the wire. This worked after about 6-7 throws. 2 throws to get back up

GPLawrence used a long stick and executed a well-timed 'jump and swing' maneuver. 3-4 throws to put shoes back

SeeSeanSeek's friend threw a rock and got the shoes down with the first throw! They also got the shoes back up with a single throw.

BlackAce tied two survey sticks together (later returned) and poked at the shoes till they fell over the line. fourth throw with attitude got them back up. Was hampered by wide straw brim hat, didn't see shoes till he had searched a while.

tmytkr used the stone throwing method. He estimates it took around 20 to 25 throws. Several tries needed to get it back.

pqgeo lashed two sticks together using his bootlaces. 9-year-old pqgeo #4 got it back up on his fourth throw.

brianw46 found a bush branch that he and a friend used to knock the shoes down. Then found a part of a fence by the creek which they used putting shoes back up.

kf6cmp joked with oldfrenchy that it was the shoes. Oldfrenchy used a long board he found to get shoes down. Same board used to put them back.

Tombraiders used an old stick to push a shoe up all the way and then drag the other down. shoes also returned by stick.

RickR & KarenM used the discarded split rail fence. One throw.

Armando & Co used a walking stick along with discarded lumber tied together with wrist straps from flashlights. Put back same way.

PL used a discarded 2x4 first pinata style then pushing shoe up and over. 2 throws.

Ranger Captain used a doodad with a forward and reverse switch.

Parsa was the last to use a previously used Doodad that he found in Mark71Mark's doodad dumping ground located under bushes by powerline tower. took three throws to put up.

DaveF967 used the Rock throwing method, one throw to replace.

Gumby used a 6 foot pole that he found under an Oak tree. Two throws to replace.

At one point PaintMtnMan was on Howling Wolfs shoulders trying to get the shoes with bikedog looking on, they ultimately resorted to a long stick. One throw to return to wire.

That's all of them.

My toughest so far has ben the Sly Foxes cache. Not that is is incredibly diificult, but I fell and twisted my knee somewhat fierce. I was still on the clock for work as was wondering about how I tell them this. Fortunatly a good icing that night and I was as good as new..... well maybe just better. I do not know why but I have not been back. icon_confused.gif

I was looking at the caches on the Orange County coast, and they're all easy caches (1/1, etc.). I was wondering if anyone wanted to do a geocache marathon over a day or two. Maybe some weekend after the picnic.

I did this before two times in the Fullerton/Brea area and bagged well over a dozen caches a day. Although I enjoy serious hiking and finding just a single cache, these marathons are fun to see how many finds you can make really fast. It takes serious planning, but more than one pair of eyes would make it even easier.

Hi everyone,

I'm getting close to the end of my initial run of YRIUM'S PALs geocacher trading cards. I wish I would have set the initial ending number at higher than twenty. Who knew that I would be able to make more pals as time passed.

So my Idea was to make a travelbug that allows the finder to pick the next geocacher to have a card made for them. I created a card to use as the travel bug and I'm sending it out without the dog tags. Its called the UDesignit travelbug and I'm hoping my directions aren't too confusing. Could a couple of you go to the travelbug page and let me know if anything isn't clear?

Directions that are on back of UDesignit travelbug card

----- back of card -----

Hello!

This UDesignit Travelbug’s number is nnnnnn. Use it when entering a log at www.Groundspeak.com.

You get to chose who will be the subject for Yrium’s next UDesignit geocacher trading card! Describe the layout if you want or leave it up to Yrium to make it.

----- end of back of card ----

Thanks for any/all suggestions,

I think your page is very clear in what you want to see happen.

However, you may want to list which cachers already have cards done on them. Also, since the bug is tagless for now, does the person who names the cacher need to supply the dog tags, and what is the reason for no dogtags again?

Sounds like a great idea.

Night Hunter.

P.S. I was so close to scoring a Stork Trading card when they were place in Mast Madness. Ever since then I keep hoping to find one---NH

Good Idea! I'll add the names of the people who I've already made cards of to the travelbug page.

The reason I decided to print the travelbug tag number on the back of the card instead of attaching the dogtags is I think that a few people might like to keep the travelbug card itself since it looks like it belongs in a display with the previous cards I've released.

So since the number is on the back of the card no dogtags are actually needed, at least, as long as people realize that the number on the back of the card is the travelbug's id number.

Thanks for the quick response Night hunter,

P.S. You can probably find a Stork Card out at BUFFALO GALS cache in tierrasanta. I left five out there not too long ago.

Yrium,

I wish that I could get more of the Pals cards. I only have Tuna and yourself. It would be cool if there were packs available with the full set. It must not be cheap to make them though. It was a pain just to make my Lorenzo's Gold waypoint tag again.

I like the idea of the new cards. Go for it. Everything on the travelbug page seems OK.

BTW, I want to give you an update on the cache larva. It's still safe and sound, but I was definitely not. I got bronchitis, then I broke my foot and was unable to walk much for quite a while, then I got a respiratory flu, then I got bronchitis again which turned into pneumonia, then I got pleuritis... I'm waiting for the African Sleeping Sickness next. Still, I've been gradually upping my cache numbers with mostly easy caches in order to get a little exercise. They seem to multiply exponentially nowadays. I'm starting more serious work on the larva's cache, and I hope it will be done within a month. It should be well worth it. If my work of caching art turns to naught, I'll just plant the thing and let you trade for an ammo box.

Parsa,

I'll keep releasing copies of the the earlier card numbers as well as the latest ones as I come out with them. I think I need to figure out a better way to inform people where particular cards can be found. Maybe a simple webpage with the names of the caches that I've dropped the cards in is all that is needed. Then if people would continue to let me know by mentioning it in the log when they grab a card I can update it.

I might consider putting in a 'full set' as a first finders prize, if I ever get healthy enough to hide a cache thats not a driveby, but your right the cost of time and materials to produce the cards is a bit more than I can afford to be dropping 20 at a time in a cache.

And to tell you the truth... Its pretty cool to read the logs of cachers in search of a particular card. Adds a little thrill to the hunt... "Will I be in time to get the last Yrium's Pals card #so-and-so in the cache?". The cachers that are close to having a full set have had to be on their toes, ready to leave the house at a moments notice to get the latest card. I wouldn't want to demean their efforts by now making it easier to get a full set. I'll be sticking with the five card drops that I've been doing.

Don't hurry on my account. I understand how health problems put a crimp on extra-curricular projects. Take it easy, no rush at all.

Yrium, You could just keep it updated right here. I know we get a few visitors, this thread has been visited over 1100 times. Or you could even start a new thread called Yrium's Cards and let people know what is going on there.

I was attacked by the bees at the Buffalo Gal's cache in Mission Trails. A lot of people have already been attacked by these bees. Vagabond didn't get the cache because he was attacked. They swarmed out agressively, one stung my face, and then several chased me half way to the trail head. These could very well be Africanized ("killer") bees. These guys were *really* mad. Some cachers got lucky, but you may not. I suggested that the cache be archived. The Buffalo Gals have placed 29 caches, but only found 6. I don't know what's up with that. I myself waited until I had 50 finds before I felt comfortable placing my own.

Night Hunter,

That's an excellent Idea! I think I'll whip up a webpage for ease of use for card seekers at some point but for now I'm creating a thread called 'yrium's cards'.

Good call,

The cache was also moved by a park ranger who didn't *want* people going off-trail on those rocks, but I don't think the main coordinates were ever updated to reflect this. I heard that it's now close to the trail, and perhaps farther from the bees, but unless you read way back in the logs, how would anyone know this? It then leaves hunters in the position of spending way more time than necessary clambering around the original coordinates, since there's nothing there to find.

We hunted the cache in its original position, and met the bees but were not attacked, thankfully. (I've never been stung by a bee before in my life and I'm a bit afraid of the unknown!) From the location of the team's other caches, they aren't local, and any team with that hide/find ratio seems a little... odd. Six caches in a year? We did six caches Saturday.

We started thinking of hiding a cache after we had perhaps 60 or 70 finds, but we still haven't gotten around to it. Finding a place in San Diego that is acceptably far from other caches, but is also interesting, and ALSO offers a decent hiding spot, is harder than it sounds! We really want to do a hide, but we don't want it to be a poor one.

"Twitch" (Mike Benner) has started a geocaching forum as part of the Southern California Club Xterra forum. It's open to everyone, and it's free, so all you have to do is log a username and password. It can have multiple threads. Just scroll down to the "Geocaching" section. It seems that about half the members of our club are caching now. This was due mainly to a similar geocaching thread in the national Xterra Owners Club forum.

Here's the link. Come on in and talk.

We're in University City, near UCSD. There's a small arm of Rose Canyon that's somehow remained cache-less, and we're looking at that, but otherwise it seems like practically every inch of green space has already got one. Someone's even put one in a local business park!

Hi all,

We are coming over from the UK next week and will be making a one day trip down from Orange County to San Diego and over to Mexico.

We would like to hit as many caches as possible in the day but I'd also not like to miss out if the are any "un-missable" caches in the area. Which ones should we really go out of our way to do?

I have a 12XL that has the same case. That sounds just like the kind of thing I would do. I left a forest service map on my truck while off-roading recently, and one of the members of my club signaled to me about it before I drove off. When geocaching with dhsundance in Orange County I started walking away from a cache without my receiver. I guess I was distracted by having someone to talk to besides myself icon_wink.gif Thankfully he pointed out my error after I turned and walked a couple feet.

Some of you may be interested in my new locationless cache in which you need to find and photograph bell guideposts placed along El Camino Real. (First placed in 1906).

The Bells of El Camino Real (locationless)

In the San Diego County, the main route of El Camino Real went from Old Town up the coast to San Clemente. I think it went through P.B. and La Jolla before U.S. 101 was laid out. There were several side branches too. One went along Friars east to the current mission site and on to the dam. Another went east from Oceanside to Mission San Luis Rey and then on to San Antonio de Pala. Most were placed by local woman's clubs.

Cool Parsa, will have to check it out. This is a good Idea to post locationless caches that would be relate to the area since they wouldn't show up on a zipcode or "nearby" search.

Soooooo...

I also have a Locationless cace called "Border Monuments - Dont Cross That Line". That also has a large number of possiblities here in this county.

Just a little something to think about before getting rid of this cache. The City of San Diego contracts a company for getting rid of bees, if they are deemed a hazard to citizens. These guys sound like they need to go... Without mentioning the cache, maybe someone should advise the rangers of the problem. I haven't tried this cache yet, but I'd hate to see someone get hurt. icon_eek.gif

As Kite and Hawkeye pointed out, the Buffalo Gals are from out of town and don't seem to be maintaining the cache. They didn't answer my post and they have never updated the coordinates even though the cache was moved and new coordinates posted. I may take matters into my own hands soon and move it well away from the danger area and post another set of coordinates.
