+kunarion
Can you get a bunch of old smart phones (with no Sim cards)? Probably all the same model, but at least the same OS (Android or IOS). It may take a little research to be sure you have phones with GPS, fast enough to run the Apps, etc. And all on an account that allows downloading the Apps. With this in mind, if you search for "Free GPS" in App stores, you get some options. For Android, the free version of "GPS Status" is good. For iPhone, "Commander Compass Free" is good. This requires no special web site signup, just to go find a GPS point. The kids can type GPS coordinates into either, and then follow a compass pointer, and see the distance. It's pretty basic, but that might work, and it's a suitable place to start when teaching how to navigate for bearing and distance, and how "coordinates" work. It would be even simpler if you could find a bunch of all one kind of handheld hiking GPSr, used. The cost for each may be similar to the cost for each phone in the first scenario. They won't be too fancy. You still need to be sure it works as you like. But then the kids can type coords into that. Or you could even have a list of waypoints pre-loaded.
