Resources to get started on sattelite imagery and GPS handhelds

Recommended Posts

I have managed to upload BirdsEye imagery to a Garmin GPS64s handheld using BaseCamp ( v 4.2.5 ) by following the instructions, however the imagery provided is useless to me. I have determined that Google Earth or even Google Maps provide a better alternative ( for my purpouses ).

I am technically literate ( IT background ), however I am new to the technology involved ( the terms, file formats and technology are bewildering )and I would first like to get an overview of what's involved in uploading satellite imagery to handheld GPS units.

Where can I inform myself to gain an overview of what is involved in uploading imagery from Google Earth or Google Maps to my handheld GPS 64s ( links, tutorials, on-line resources / information )?

I am hoping to gain enough insight so I can better refine my search and ask more directed questions later on ( ...if needed ).

Many thanks for any hints and suggestions on where to start.

You may not want to start with Earth or Maps as there may be licensing issues. (As a practical matter, nobody's going to notice you screenshotting your favorite park. Build a tile scraper and sell the imagery from a state and you're going to capture attention you probably don't want.) Going straight to government sites can usually get you license-unrestricted aerial and satellite data. Maps and Earth two use different projections which is unlikely to matter for small areas like individual parks.

Rich did a good tutorial when this was announced. http://gpstracklog.c...er-imagery.html and http://gpstracklog.c...maps-day-2.html - it's in multiple pages. Garmin forums are pretty dead these days, but there's https://forums.garmi...min-Custom-Maps There are probably newer articles and tools, but that'll get you started.
