Geocaching in India

Hello everyone!

This is Padmaparna Ghosh. I am an assistant editor with The Times of India in New Delhi.

I am writing a story on geocaching in India and was wondering if I can interview some enthusiasts in India for the story?

I know it is not so big in India but would love to talk to some who have done this or are doing this or setting up caches anywhere in India. My email is ghoshp@gmail.com. Would love to hear from some of you and if you have the time for a quick chat, I can call at a time convenient for you.

Best,

Padma

That is a bit of an understatement; according to project-gc.com there are only 182 caches in the entire country. Not only will you have difficulty finding a cacher, the article is unlikely to find many interested readers. Good luck with your quest!

All the more reason to write the story. There are many places in the world with large populations that have very few caches. Generating interest in the game helps grow the sport in places where there is lots of room for growth and gives those that get the opportunity to travel to those places a chance to find some caches in places that might not be in the tourist book.

I do agree with NYPC above.

Caches do attract visitors and as such bring tourist revenue in places that would welcome such.

A caching friend of mine has cached in many places but not India.

I know he has been to Nepal and even had a DNF some 5000 metres up.

Good Luck with your quest though.

I have found caches in quite a few countries (20 so far) included 4 that have fewer caches than India. The first time I went to Ethiopia there were only 4 geocaches in the entire country and one of them was in the city that I was visiting (Addis Ababa). Due to a delay in my arrival I was never able to get away from the meetings I had there to try and find that one cache (even though I was about 1000' from it a couple of times.) Fortunately, I was back in Addis last year and there was another cache that I was able to get. There are over 3 million people in Addis and many interested places where a cache could be hidden but it just has't really caught on. Dar es Salaam in Tanzania is similar. There's only one cache the city of 1.3 million people.

Hi, Nice to hear of things happening in India. We are fairly new to Geocaching but were able to find quite a few during our holidays in Switzerland. Living in Kochi, Kerala, there's not much down here...so we hid one! Kochi now has one Geocache! Yeah

Look forward to seeing who's the first one to find it :)

Good job. I know very little about that part of the world but have been working on a project that could take me to India in the next year or so. One of my colleagues frequently travels to India and is leaving next week for a month long trip.

Are you considering placing more? If a geocacher was looking at a map they might consider a visit to Kochi if there were a 10 or so caches in the city but might not make the trip just for one.
