Anyone Else Find Something Illegal While Out Caching?

Well the other day I decided to go out caching with my 5y/o daughter. It was her first time and she loved the idea of "treasure hunting". We were going to the last cache of the day and it was about a half mile hike to the location b/c of the soft ground. So we're getting closer and we start to look around the brush for the cache. A few minutes into the search my daughter asked me if a soda bottle was the cache. I went and looked and saw a 2L bottle with a garden hose and a small metallic hose sticking out of it. I looked a little closer and sure enough found a Wal-Mart sack with a Mason jar that was clouded over and Lithium battery wrappers. Sure enough we stumbled upon parts to an old meth lab. We logged the coords, found the cache and quickly got out of dodge.

Has anyone else had a similar experience while out caching?

The closest thing to illegal that I've ever stumbled across while caching was a naked, crazy transient who was sleeping in the GZ.

If your discovery was in fact meth lab related, clean-up should be done by "the pros". There are VERY BAD things used in these labs. Hope your child didn't touch any of these things!

A couple of years back, there was a bunch of us cachers that made a trip to a small North Eastern town in Oklahoma to do abit of caching. At one of the caches which was a hike in some woods, we stumbled on an old meth lab site. Avoided it and later reported it to the authorities. I was in shock how a small town in the middle of nowhere would have this. The world is truely small anymore! :(

At another cache, I came across in the cache itself a most fragrant cigarette of the skunky kind left by a muggle who had found the cache by accident as it was under the ledge he would sit on and look at the view why he partook of the stuff. Left a nice little log in the journal and of course his present. :P In my younger days maybe but I did get rid of the item properly. I was glad I was the one who found it after that gentleman did before a family stumbled onto it! :(

Two weeks ago we were doing a bit of caching in Tulsa and while looking for the cache, discovered the secret cache of some brand new steak knives that were hidden under a few pieces of bark. Looks like kids used this area for their club house and we came across their weapon stash! Very interesting to say the least!

While caching in the Lakewood, WA area we came across what we think may be a meth lab. We chose to back off , mark the coordinents, and boogy. Called the cops but was transfered 3 times till I ended up at a recording. I guess labs are not a big deal there, never recieved a call back so still don't know if they even checked it out.

A cacher from the area messaged me asking for more info and was going to pass it along to someone who might do something. Still waiting to hear if it was a extra cool transient camp that needed benches, beakers, and propane tanks or just another meth lab.

Not a geocaching story, but my church recently adopted a mile of highway to clean up. Naturally we had to go to a state approved training program to learn to pick up trash properly. The presenter was giving the dos and don't and with a perfectly straight face, he told us that if we find a dead body we should contact law enforcement.

I really wonder if he thought that without that instruction, we would have put the body in one of the plastic bags and left it on the side of the road? Anyway, after 30 + years in law enforcement, that was funny to me.

Well and update on the original post. I marked the coords and then called the local Sheriff's office when i got back home. It took a little explaining to the dispatcher about what I was doing out there but then he took down my name and number and said I'd be getting a call back. Later on a deputy called and asked me all the normal questions and where it was. I tried to explain the location and said he'd look for it the next day.

I was out caching yesterday before I went to class and found a make-shift anhydrous tank. It was an old air tank with valves and a hose with corrosion all over it. All shoved in a duffel bag. Did the same thing as before, except I know all the dispatchers and deputies since i work in the county and didn't have all the same questions.

At a guardrail micro on a state highway leading to Mt Rainier we found a brand new 2 gallon (?) propane bottle tossed over the bank. I thought, "Cool! I might be able to use that.", being naive about the meth business.

My son had just been to a conference for forest managers that had a section on meth production and resultant dumping. From up on the highway he noticed a pink froth around the threads of the tank regulator and recognized it as a byproduct of meth production. The results of a future finder trying to reuse that container could have been fatal.

We called it in on that Sunday evening and the next day a county sheriff came by to take a report and he ordered a hazmat crew to go to the site.

To the original poster: I would have you and your daughter checked out ASAP by a doctor. The by-products of meth procuction are very dangerous and may cause serious health problems down the road.

To everyone: If you ever encounter anything that looks like a meth lab you should leave right away. If not because of the MAJOR health and safety hazards of being in the area of meth production but because if the lab owner finds you nearby you might find yourself dead. If you have a CCW permit be sure to carry on your excursions.

I think it would be a good idea for geocaching.com to have an informational link about meth labs and what to look for.

Stay safe!

Found an inmate "bracelet" while hunting an urban cache in Detroit. Since it was found near the entrance to the tunnel to Canada, I was worried it was an escapee. It is like a heavy duty hospital bracelete with the guys picture, name and birthday on it. I called the Sherrifs office and was referred to inmate property department. The woman who answered that phone was pretty rude, but managed to confirm that they didn't want it back and the guy was not an escapee. Still not convinced, but I took the prize home. It will be my next TB with a mission to go visit prisons across the US. Dark, I know, but truely americana...

...Also, found a homeless fella who confiscated the huge cache container and used it to store his food in.

This happens 100% of the time in India. It has a very high population, very high poverty, and very high population density. Even in far rural areas, people are lining the roaadways two or three peple thick at all hours of day and night. Any and all geocache containers, if found by the citizens, are immediately confiscated by the citizens and turned into storage containers, with zero exceptions. This makes it very hard to place a geocache there that will last longer than five minutes, as people are everywhere, and eyes are everywhere, and there is no such thing as being alone in India -- there are always people around, and always eyes watching. It is the ultimate geocache placement/survival challenge, and explains why there are only a few geocaches in India!

A late evening a couple of years ago, I looked for a micro/small cache that was supposed to be hidden inside a hollow space in the framework of a bridge in Oslo. After some searching, I found a black plastic bag with something in it. I removed it and went to some nearby benches to do the logging/trading. I discovered that the plastic bag contained hundreds of small plastic bags containing white powder. Realising this was probably drugs, I immediately jumped on a tram and went to the nearest police station. The "drug expert" on duty assumed that it was most likely cocaine, about 150 grams or so. He told me it was unlikely that a drug stash of that size would be left there for long, so I'd been lucky not to be discovered by the owner of the stuff.

The real cache was moved to a safer location immediately after - I guess the owner agreed that searching for a cache here might be dangerous if the drug dealer was looking for the "thief".

I'm sure most of us have "heard" about meth labs. Maybe saw some footage on the news or a piece in the local paper.

I would encourage ALL to read up a bit more on the issue as more & more labs are showing up in the woods.

Especially if you are caching with kids.. In their excitement they may "think" they've found a cache & end up exposed to some seriously toxic chemicals. After reading this thread I googled & found some rather graphic & straight to the point articles about the dangers surrounding a meth lab.

Article in Outdoor Life Magazine <--Long but very informative.

Faces of Meth <--links & pictures of the effects of meth on people over a short period of time.

Article in The Memphis Flyer <--Info on what TN is doing.

Related Thread <--from Mississippi Wildlife Forums.

As you can see this is NOT an urban issue nor is it regional.. Learn what to watch for, what odors are present and what to do if you should find one.

Be safe, be careful & happy caching.

While out this weekend caching, I found a gun in the woods, partially hidden under a log. It was about 15 feet from the actual geocache... We're still not sure if it was a small caliber rifle, or a nicer looking B.B. gun (didn't really want to touch it before the police showed up), but either way it didn't belong in the woods, especially 20 feet off of the trail near a geocache. We called the cops and led them to the location. We told the officer about geocaching, and showed him where this particular cache was hidden. He was friendly, and seemed interested - maybe he'll end up becoming a geocacher!

Was placing a cache this last Saturday and when I came down from the mesa top I found a deer skull wedged in between two rocks, from the rain and weather I suppose washing it down hill. Coyote skull thats on my bookcase, tin can with soldered seams (not crimped), soldered flat, thats an old can with lead seams.

Back in the late 70's while quail hunting with my brother, we came upon a couple dozen pot plants in nice neat rows in the forest. They had been carefully maintained and groomed as was evident in their huge banana shaped appendages.

We did not report it to the police.

We also did not snip off the appendages and fill our daypacks with the stuff (as far as you know).

Well here is my 2cents as a Law Enforcement Officer (specifically a Narcotics Detective)

There are numerous variables to this.

1. What kind of drug(s) is it?

ie did you find a pot field or is it a meth lab?

marijuana is not absorbed through the skin while coke and meth could be

Marijuana fields would be looked at and a decision would be made as to whether to just pull the plants with no investigation or to sit on the plants with the hopes of catching the grower. We do sometimes find fields with booby traps in them but not often in my jurisdiction. (NC) Just be observant. Take a reading at the site and advise Law Enforcement as soon as you can and provide them with what information you can. ( feel free to continue on the hunt unless the grower is actually present and knows u spotted them.)

Meth Labs are unique dangers all by thierselves. (ie chemicals, booby traps and violent subjects) Get a reading and advise LE IMMEDIATELY!

Leave the area IMMEDIATELY!

I was just wondering what a meth lab looks like? I've heard about them...but have never seen one. So, I'm not sure I'd know what I was looking at even if I walked right up onto one. Can someone email me what I should be looking for? (ashley.sanders@earthlink.net) Thanks!

i never found anything illegal but people have at one of my caches. turns out the day after i hid my cache there was a drug bust a little farther along the trail. turns out all the cachers that went after it that day got interviewed and had backroud checks and one got the pat down. :( well one of those cachers claimed he saw a pipe for meth so im like ok better bring your ID :D

Not caching related, but an odd find nonetheless;

while on patrol in Cuba, our patrol was wandering down by the ocean (lots of cliffs). One of the guys spotted something. We sent him down to check; it was a kilo of pot. Literally. Apparently, smugglers, when seeing the coast guard racing towards them, dump everything overboard. Well, this one washed up onto the rocks. It was no good, as it seems to either been at sea a long time, or washed up on the rocks for a while. Either way, it got turned in. And, it stunk. Badly.

There are so many different ways to make meth and each method will take different kinds of materials. Labs will have things like 2 liter soda bottles, coffee filter papers, torn up lithium batteries, Sudafed or similar type medicine, charcoal lighter fluid, anhydrous ammonia, ether, phosphorous, styrofoam coolers, LP bottles like on a BBQ grill, quart jars. There will probably be some kind of off white residue and/or liquid. If it's a fresh lab you might notice something that smells like cat urine.

Do NOT touch any of it. It's all hazardous stuff. Report it to the police and a meth clean up team will come pick it up. It requires a clean up team just like a hazard material spill only on a smaller scale. To dispose of the stuff is expensive. We figured for a small lab the minimum cost is $2000 per lab to clean up. It was not unusual to find 3-4 labs every day in a county so it can get really expensive. It's your tax dollars at work.

If it's a working lab in that it doesn't look like stuff is just thrown away but assembled in some order "cooking" then leave it, get out of the area quickly, and report it immediately. Tweakers can be extremely violent characters.

On marijuana fields = Also be very careful. We've found booby trapped fields with trip wired shotguns, explosives, and punji pits. Some will leave $1 bills scattered around. If the money is missing then they know people have been near their fields. Some growers will set up a tent and live close by their fields to guard them. If you stumble on a field then retrace your steps and clear the area.

I recently talked to a man and woman who were geocaching locally and found a glass jar full of rice. They figured it was the cache and opened it up. Apparently it also contained a bunch of little packets of crack. They put it back and e-mailed the owner of the cache. The owner went up to check out his cache with the local police department and it made the newspaper. It was an estimated $6,000+ worth of crack. Kinda scary. Swizzle

OK. This is such a dangerous topic that I believe we should have some information out there. Since a lot of cachers will find things such as this, but do not hang out in the forums area, I believe it would be best if we could have a few our of fellow cachers who also moonlight as law enforcement help us all out. I agre with a previous posting to have something out on Geccaching.com as a way to help out our unsung heroes by giving them GPS coords while in our searches. I am on the fence with another cacher who said we might want to start packing while out on a hunt. I usually pack a bb gun for snakes, but would hate to trade that in for a .357. This is supposed to be a fun sport. But then again, times are a changin. We should all be careful out there regardless of how "safe" it seems to be.

Read my post #28 above.

We have found booby trapped fields. A hidden shotgun trip wired, punji pits, dead falls, hidden explosives altho that is very rare but we've seen it. The usual is the punji pit and seen several wired shotguns.

People don't realize just how dangerous these folks make the area. The punji pits are to injure a person. The shotguns and dead falls would definitely injure someone but they can also easily kill a person. The sad part if it is they don't discriminate. They may get you, or they may get your 5 yr old kid who is running ahead of you on the trail.

The meth chemicals are poison. Think if your 5 yr old runs ahead and picks up the bag of discarded meth products thinking it might be the cache. With this stuff you don't get a second chance or a do-over.

Note to self: do not go caching near Springfield, IL.

I have never seen anything more illegal than litter and public nudity. I'm sure there is more stuff around, but I haven't found anything....maybe I'm just not paying close enough attention.

I got to run all over the state, and sometimes out of the state. Great fun doing flyovers in helicopters then dropping in to clear out the large fields.

Found one of the booby trapped shotguns and some of the punji pits in the Shawnee National Forest in the southern tip of IL. Found other punji pits near the Wabash River between IL and IN.

It's rare to find booby traps at pot fields but when you do it reminds you to keep on your toes. The last 1000 fields may be just planted along corn fields and in clearings but maybe the next one will have the booby trap. Or maybe it won't and the one after that one will. Or maybe the first one you find.

Much the same here... I have never seen anything more illegal than litter, people of all seven or eight genders soliciting for sex (almost always in city parks or highway rest stop areas), prostitution (by women in city parks) and Goth teenagers smoking pot (again, in city parks.) In fact, geocaching aside for a moment, we live in a forested wilderness area known as the Frederick Watershed, which is widely known for having been used for hundreds of years as a convenient place for dumping dead bodies, brewing moonshine, burying loot, and for conducting clandestine moonshine and drug deals, and yet... in all my hikes and walks around here, the worst I have seen is people soliciting for sex (in trailhead parking lots), suburban homeowners dumping trash illegally along the roadside, and dogs running off-leash.

Oh well. My life is boring, I guess. . . Note to self: do not go caching near Springfield, IL.

BTW, sorry for my relative absence from the forums for the past ten weeks -- I have been a virtual prisoner for that time in my laboratory, working on a bizarre project but very successful project which involves quantum physics and anomalies of space-time geometry. Oh, and superstring theory.

We are very worried what your next cache will be like, if it has taken ten weeks in the lab to perfect it.

I haven't found anything terribly illegal, but I do read about them in logs. "Was going to hide the first part of the multi there, but found envelope of white powder." "Couldn't find the cache, but found a hand gun hidden in the wall."

A month or so back Koilady, her sister and I made a caching run to Marietta, OH, down by the river. We found a dozen or so caches over the course of the day, but one really stood out. I knew I was looking for a micro, and I suspected a magnetic key case. Okey dokey, I check all the usual suspects, and there under a park bench I found one. I palm it and walk back to the car to log it. Koilady hands me a pen out the window and I open the case. Well, sir, there was no log, only a tiny plastic bag with nothing in it and about six or eight lumps of a vegetable material that I of course did not recognize from time misspent back in my youth. I said to Koilady "Dang, look at this." (well something that meant about the same thing) and showed it to her. She was an innocent child when I met her and she had no idea what it was. I told her, and pretty high quality stuff too. Didn't call LEO, he was actually nearby directing traffic around a movie shoot by Sci-Fi channel. I did drop the stuff on the ground as I wanted nothing what so ever to do with it. Clearly there was no log, so I found a cracker jack prize baseball card on the ground nearby, signed my hairball45, and put the whole mess back. The hider told me I was really close, that it sure wasn't his, but go ahead and take the find anyway. He figured the keycase actually had been his at one time as he had had trouble with kids disturbing his cache at the site. My illegal material story.

Oh! The work in my lab which occupied me so deeply and for so long had nothing to do with geocaching, but rather was a research and development project for a bizarre device that I was designing.

As for my next cache, which was published about a week ago, yes, it is quite sick and extreme!

I found a pearl handled automatic hand gun on the way to GCT9B6 on 02/03/06. I took pictures and turned it in to the police. It might have been thrown from a car into the river as they were driving. Now I found out that I didn't have to turn it in, I could have kept it! Oh well. There are pictures with my log (posted as lucasayoung)

I'm new to geocaching. We went to a city park this past Sunday and found a cache that is in a wooded area. It was pouring rain so I left the kids in the car with my mom. My dad and I went to find the cahce and it was really creepy because it was getting dark and we were in a not so nice area apparently. We found the cache hidden in the woods, but it has several syrnges in the hiding place an brillo pads on the pathway. I was so glad I left the kids in the car. Not only did we find that, but we also found a poor little dog tied to a tree with an extension cord. It was so sad looking, sitting there in the rain. We called the nonemergency line to the police and they said they would have animal control come out and get it. We went back 4 hours later to check on it and it was still there. My mom went to Wal-Mart and bought some dog food and was going to feed it but when she got back a police officer was there and he said animal control was on it's way. He said she had a pretty bad wound on her side. It's so sad that someone would do that. I felt so sorry for her. I would have taken her home if my dear hubby would have let me. I did have to laugh though...my oldest daughter was really upset and she asked me with this concerned look on her face...."momma isn't it dangerous for the dog to be tied up with an extension cord since it's raining outside?" It was very hard to stay straight faced and tell her it's only dangerous when it's plugged into an electrical outlet. :(

Ahh yes. Went for a FTF one dark and rainy night, literally and quite physically, got a big DNF. Stumbled all over the hill it was on, looked like a sad drunk or super-high druggy. Anyway I finally looked at the hint, make that wet smeared hint. Refigured it all and searched a new area. Found a nice little bag of crack. Removed it and tossed it in the trase when I got home. Went back and got the cah in daylight a couple of days later. I had to laugh at myself when I saw the stuff I had been stumbling around in, lucky I didn't fall and break my leg or crack my head open.

Not while caching, but I've found a pot patch and a dead body while Orienteering. (Not at the same time) Body was decomposing in a shallow grave in a hefty bag.

Ok, that's a story you must share!

And why don't I ever find anything more interesting than dead animals and panties? (no, not together because THAT would be interesting!)

Actually last week while my wife and I were out caching we found a couple of things at a couple different caches. At the first cache while searching for it we found a hash pipe. No big deal. Crushed it with my hikers and moved on. It was near a school play ground too so we buried it after it was crushed. And then at another cache nearby we thought we had found the cache but turned out to be someone's stash complete with bong and torch to light it up. We left it alone though. Was hidden under a stump, carefully coverd up with some bark and stones. Just saw the corner of the bag it was in. Found the real cache only like 10 meters away. Can't wait to see what we find next!
