+Titus Adduxas
I'm in the USA at the moment and am targeting webcams as there are only 14 in the whole of the UK. Whilst ALL webcams require images from the actual webcam to log as a smiley it seems that over here many cachers are just taking photographs proving they've been at the location. There's one near Lake Winnipesauke NH which is only seasonal but still folk are claiming the smiley though they can't even access the location let alone get the webcam image! I'm rather surprised really as following that logic they could go somewhere near ground zero on any cache and log it as found because they were there!!! Come on guys - if you can't get your image from the webcam you haven't 'found' the cache!!! Quote Link to comment
+igator210
It is a frustrating trend. I can excuse someone with very few finds not knowing the rules, but I've seen people with over 10,000 finds do that. Another new trend is to take a picture from any webcam and post it. Quote Link to comment
Keystone
Proper owner maintenance of a webcam cache would result in the deletion of bogus logs, like selfies. But, some owners are absent or inattentive. Therefore, the quest for a rare webcam smiley through "creative alternatives" puts the webcam cache at risk of being archived by a reviewer for lack of maintenance. When I'm compelled to reach out to webcam cache owners, I allow a bit of extra latitude since the cache type is so rare. If the webcam link is dead and there's no prospects for its returning to service, however, archiving the listing is the inevitable result. Quote Link to comment

+Team DEMP
Our favorite webcam find is from Clemson, SC this past May taken on the day one daughter graduated. She's in the picture in her cap & gown. https://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LUID=501762c6-173a-425f-b23c-542eb35c55fd Geocaching is a hobby/game and there's no competition except with yourself. For those that cheat to inflate their finds/levels/badges/challenges/grids, that's an ethical shortcoming they have to live with and it doesn't effect me. I see it happen more often then one would hope when I look at an easier D/T cache that has 4 DNFS, 1 find with a description of just TFTC, and then 4 DNFS. Quote Link to comment

I am not condoning the activity but thought I'd point out that neither is a new thing. People have been doing selfies and alternative webcams since I started caching in 2005. I know as I am one of the few cachers that chases webcams and have over 100 finds. Quote Link to comment
+Manville Possum
Webcams were a fun addition to the game while they lasted. The last web cam cache I visited had a broken link and the owner has not signed on in a few years, but there was an active link in the web Camera category on the Waymarking site. They still are a fun cache type, but obsolete from requiring to call a buddy to take a photo from a PC when we can do the same on site site with a smartphone. Quote Link to comment

Excellent point and one that points out my disinterested attitude towards the cache type now. It was quirky fun to try and coordinate the picture capture aspect of the challenge with someone at home. I don't have much to add on the webcam topic, as I don't go for them, but I'm about an hour north of Lake Winnipesaukee just above Franconia Notch. That's a nice area down there and if you drive up I-93 to Franconia Notch, the foliage is still pretty good although it's past peak. Still worth the drive if you have time, very pretty area Edited October 13, 2016 by JeepFreak81 Quote Link to comment

Taking a picture of yourself on your own phone at a dead-link webcam site and submitting it - isn't that like going to a traditional cache that you can't find, taking a piece of paper out of your pocket, writing your name on it and claiming the smiley because "you signed a log"? I just configured my home system to cache the webcam images, went to the site and posed for a while, and then returned home to sort through the cached webcam images to pick the one I wanted to use for the online log. I agree with Touchstone in that it was more of a challenge (made it more fun for me) when i had to depend on someone being at home to grab the image. I still like coming across them, will use my phone too, but they aren't quite the same as they once were. I agree with the OP. It's a shame that so many are on auto pilot these days and that proper maintenance isn't being done. Quote Link to comment

+Wet Pancake Touring Club
For the one and only webcam cache I have found, I setup a scheduled job on my computer to capture the webcam picture every minute. I then went out to the cache, posed in front of it for 2 minutes, and noted the time. When I got back home, I looked for the webcam picture taken at the appropriate time, and logged the cache. Its getting late enough in the season that it may be closed. My cell phone didn't work at the summit but worked off and on during the trip up. If you are able to get to the top dress warm. +Pork King
I am fairly vigilant in checking the logs on my webcam cache (the only one left in my state). There has been a few that I deleted because they did not "pose". In other words, it looked like a webcam capture of some random person walking by. The only time I have accepted a non webcam picture is when the webcam was down, but before I knew about it. As soon as I realized it was, the cache was disabled with no other selfie logs accepted. I am also planning another trip to the great northeast this coming year and I plan to revisit MWO. I want to redo my webcam picture since the last one stinks. The real reason for the trip to the top though is that I noticed in pictures posted by others that my stone at the 9/11 memorial rock pile cracked in half. Only half of my stone is visible in many of the pictures :-( Need to drop a replacement. Quote Link to comment

+elrojo14
I have been wanting to get to 25 webcams for some time so I hit them up anytime I travel. When we took a trip through New England last summer, I discovered a great way to get webcam photos is by posting that you are so far away via Facebook and asking people to snap your picture for you. Your friends can get into it and it is fun to see someone you know on webcam 2500 miles away! Well this summer I drove from Southern California to Washington and across to Minnesota and I got my 25th and final (for challenges) webcam in Washington. However, my first of the trip in Oregon was only possible because I told people I was about 5 minutes away and they got me on camera when my cell phone didn't work. I took a selfie just in case, but I really, really wanted to avoid that as I don't think it is kosher. Turns out two of my friends got it for me and posted it to Facebook. It worked out great. https://coord.info/GLNRMM6Y So don't underestimate the power of social media when out hunting webcam caches. Edit: LOL. I was just looking through the other cache logs at the webcam I just posted and the last log seems fishy. What do you all think? https://coord.info/GLP75QFM Edited October 25, 2016 by elrojo14 Quote Link to comment
