Cascade Reviewer
Hasbro has been having an ongoing facebook competition to put in a new word in the Scrabble dictionary (this is the first time they've added a new word in 9 years). They've been narrowing down the words, day by day, starting with 16 words. They will announce the winner on April 10. Some of you have probably seen this posted on facebook. Today's battle is between the word "Cosplay" and "Geocache". We thought it would be fun to post a thread to talk about this, and if you feel like chiming in on Hasboro's facebook page, here's a link: Facebook link. Vote for Geocache! But of course, if you like another word better, vote for the word you like best. Quote Link to comment

+NeverSummer
I'm betting (no money, and certainly no recently-defeated bitcoins) on "zen" vs "ew" in the final. For playability in the game of Scrabble, these would both be great additions. I can see the players coming out in droves to fight off a seven-letter word with lower-scoring tiles versus a two-letter or four-letter word with high value tiles. Two-letter words can win the game, and "ew" would be a pretty nice one to be able to drop on your opponent with a triple-letter or triple-word score. As for our allegiance to Geocaching and the word "geocache" being added, that would be nice to see win out. Quote Link to comment
+The Leprechauns
Ew isn't a word ... it's a noise you make. "Geocache" is more than a word, it's a way of life. One would hope that, in a fair and just world, "a way of life" would win out over "a noise you make." From a scrabble player's perspective, I'm imagining Player 1 placing "ACHE," then Player 2 adding a C to spell "CACHE" and then Player 3 wiping up by adding "GEO." Quote Link to comment

+The_Incredibles_
I voted 'geocache'. I can't even understand this bit about adding words. When we play scrabble, we just use whatever words we come up with, we don't check a list to make sure it's allowed. 1 Quote Link to comment

+GrateBear
I don't get it. I've played scrabble for decades and never knew there were words that weren't a part of it. Does Hasbro have a lock on "allowed" words? I thought you played a word, and your opponent could challenge it--if they dared Must be more of the dumbing down of the U.S. Quote Link to comment
Cascade Reviewer
I'm assuming it's the official Scrabble dictionary. My mom is a huge fan of Scrabble. Even though we had the Scrabble dictionary, we'd usually end up using Webster's, because there just aren't enough words in the Scrabble dictionary. Quote Link to comment

No, really hardcore geocachers use an unspecified code, to challenge you needed to be able decode it first (like the puzzle a few years ago that use rot13 Drow language). Quote Link to comment

I!
A little hard to do this accurately, but "geocache" appears to be beating "zen" comfortably. Recent voting is seeing "zen" gain some ground, though. Quote Link to comment
I!
I would have thought that Zen would already be in the scrabble dictionary. AFAIK, words that must be capitalised have never been allowed in the official Scrabble words list, so it must be a word I've never heard of, "zen", in the final, rather than the original "Zen". Hmm. Most people just play it for F-U-N which is the whole point of a G-A-M-E. Like with various card games, the rules can be stated at the beginning. If you and your friends want a certain word included, it's easy enough to do that. If you don't want to, that's *your* decision. Quote Link to comment
