placing cache: 528ft rule. Some caches dont show on map?

So my family and I live on an island, we have found all but 1 caches on the island and now want to place a new one. When looking on the map provided after clicking the "Create a new Geocache" button it shows a map of our island with red circles denoting the radiuses of existing caches so you get a better idea of where you can place your cache. The problem is I'v noted not all caches on the island are represented on this radius map and im wondering if that means I can place a cache in a spot where I know other caches are nearby(within 528ft) since there 528ft spread is not represented on the "where you can place" radius map?

thanks

Robert

The "red circles" shows only the spot of Traditional caches. Multi, Puzzles and others where the published coordinates are not the place where the caches really are, wont show all the stages on the map.

After choosing a "free area", you can send your cache to revision... and the reviewer will alert if there is any stage of a cache nearby.

Have those caches been archived after you found them? Some caches/stages/waypoints won't show up for various reasons. When I checked that red circle map just now, I definitely don't see the stages of puzzles and multis. AND two of my own Traditionals have no red circle... that's a kinda odd... must be a database refresh thing.

Anyway, since you've found the caches in your area, you can check the distances yourself in the field (or in map software on the PC or on the GPSr). I save all the waypoints in GyPSy just for this purpose; to allow me to easily check a possible cache location when I discover a cool spot to place one.

the Closest cache in question in a traditional cache and it doesn't appear on the red dot map, however taking the advice of kunarion I used google earth and a distance calculator to the location I want to place our cache and luckily its 540FT away, so it should just barely make it. perhaps their system needs an update?

The planning map has this text:

Geocaches should be a minimum of 528ft/161m away from each other. The map below displays visible locations that are already taken by existing geocaches.

The map does not display hidden waypoints and some other potential obstacles to hiding a geocache.

Your location must still be reviewed by a community volunteer after it is submitted.

Some things to take into consideration are the "?" puzzles and the multicaches. And other items that may only be known to your reviewer.

Interesting, im wondering if where I plan to place the cache is an off limits area(the only reason I can see why the traditional cache nearby wouldn't appear), I suppose I wont know until I submit it for review, by all accounts its a public area, not a park or other managed property, but who knows

Don't forget about physical stages of multicaches.

There's a lot of caches on that island. Two of them are multicaches. One definitely sounds like it has at least one physical stage.

And the final location of the "?" cache needs to be taken into consideration.

I don't know where you plan to place a cache, so I'm throwing out some other things to take into consideration.

But doing a "coordinates check" with your Reviewer should let you know if there are any problems.

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by... less sinister causes. The red circles are new, and apparently there are glitches where not all traditional caches show up.

Think of the red circles as an early warning system, not as a way to squeeze one more cache into an already-saturated area.

Not all public areas allow geocaches, and some public areas have restrictions on geocaches beyond the guidelines enforced by Groundspeak. As a geocache owner, it's up to you to do the research, and to establish adequate permission.
