Premium membership v paid for App

Hi,

I have only recently become aware of Geocashing and think it's something that will appeal to me. I have tried searching once and found three cashes using the free intro App on my iPhone.

I know this question has been asked before but I am still a bit confused about the answer!

On the free App there are numerous advanced geocache that are shaded in grey and not green. I understand there are two options available to me and I would like to know which is the best one to view the advanced cashes. If I upgrade to premium membership by paying annually, and continue to use the free App will I be able to view the advanced cashes or do I need to purchase the full App from the App Store? If I purchase this App does this make me a premium member for three months or do I continue being a basic member? I have rad a number of negative reviews about the full paid for App which is putting me off buying it.

Ideally I would like to continue to search using my iPhone and one of the Apps to find the numerous advanced cashes nearby.

Thanks in advanced!

The full paid-for app does not make you a premium member.

I know it's confusing, but the app and Geocaching membership are two different things!

Membership is $30.00 a year. The app will be extra.

If you purchase the full app, you will be able to see all the caches available, even as a basic (free) member, other than Premium Member Only caches. Some caches are designated Premium Member Only, and as a basic member you won't see them.

To do what I bolded of your message, you should join as a Premium Member, and then use an app of your choice.

I think I'd disagree.

The paid for app is OK. It's what I use when I use a GPS device. It's a one off cost and will let you find a lot more caches more quickly. It's £7.99 I think - mostly the negative reviews seem to be about the "misselling" (hey, you might get a phone call about that...) of premium membership...

There are about 5000 caches within a 30 km radius of Chester (based on where you've found caches). About 20-25% of those are "premium" caches - i.e. you have to pay to be able to get the coordinates. It's difficult to tell how many of those are "advanced" or any better than the standard caches. If you restrict the search to caches with Difficulty or Terrain of 2.5 or higher (which is probably what the free app is stopping you from seeing) then there are 262 caches, with 48 premium only. Of the 14 most favourited of those only 2 are premium only.

I don't think - at the minute - you're missing much by not being a premium member. The utility of a single payment for the app is probably a more important step in my opinion and in my experience. That will let you get a bit deeper - then once you've found a few more you can decide if it's necessary to head for premium membership.

Of course, you might prefer to look for a different app. I'd be interested to hear if there are any which are better and cheaper.

Good luck etc.. :-)

If me, I'd get the paid (called "pro" I think now) app and skip the premium membership until I felt I could use one or more of its benefits.

"Advanced caches" are simply traditionals with higher terrain/difficulty and non-traditional caches.

Non-traditionals include multis, puzzle/mystery caches, letterbox hybrids, virtuals, webcams, Earthcaches, challenge caches and Wherigo, all with the majority not requiring a premium membership to find.

I agree with the above.

Pay for the app.

It will show more caches, and more types, but not Premium Member Only caches.

IF you want the more advanced features (Or cache in an area that has A LOT of Premium Member Only caches) then get Premium Membership.

I think the paid for app will be of more use to show you more caches, than paying for Premium Membership with the Trial/Free app.

*The paid for app is a very different user interface from the free app.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the replys. I'm going to pay for the App and see how I get on. I'm sure this will help.

GOOD move.....the $10 one time for the app is the best money I ever spent.

I've had a Premium membership from the beginning and wouldn't be without it as we use dedicated GPS units 99 % of the time but its great having the iPhone along for access to ALL the logs and other updated information as well as caching on the fly.
