+Rustynails
I received a new event notification. It was published by HQ and not the local reviewers. After reading the description and examining the logo it looked like a promotion for the cachers product. I looked at the cachers profile and see it's 1 of 43 events. A summer long event tour of 43 different states at this time. You probably saw this event pop up in your area. I know a couple local cachers tried to include a business in their event but were ask to remove it. Does Groundspeak have rules prohibiting this or has this changed ? Quote Link to comment

+Rustynails
Caching With Captain Rodney's I assume. Link for Help Center article on this That's the one. I guess the rules have changed. Event Caches, like other geocaches, will only be published if they meet the commercial cache guideline. Commercial geocaches are disallowed. Cache listings perceived as commercial will not be published. A commercial cache listing has one or more of the following characteristics: 1.It has overtones of advertising, marketing or promotion. 2.It suggests or requires that the finder go inside a business, interact with employees and/or purchase a product or service. 3.It contains links to businesses, agencies, commercial advertisers, charities, or political or social agendas. 4.It contains the logo of a business or organization, including non-profit organizations. 5.It contains the name of a business or commercial product. I guess the rules have changed. No, the rules haven't really changed at all. You'll notice that Groundspeak has been partnering with other companies for various promotions since at least 2004 (the yellow Jeep TBs). Actually, the APE caches would fit, except that they were actual caches, rather than trackables. Quote Link to comment
+Sherminator18
This is geocaching.com's newest trackable promotion. Captain Rodney's has partnered with Geocaching HQ for these events and will be giving away trackables. https://www.geocaching.com/promotions/promo/captainrodneys/ Quote Link to comment
+Wet Pancake Touring Club
It's a Trackable Promotion. GS partners with someone that wants to promote their name by releasing trackables. I went to an event that was solely for the purpose of handing out the Airstream trackables. That particular event was not commercial IMO. I showed up, ate ice cream, got a trackable, and talked with other geocachers. No Airstream salemen hanging around. They didn't bring a trailer to look at or anything. Quote Link to comment
Keystone
The rules have not changed, because this is an official promotion. The commercialism guidelines are designed to prevent "free advertising" by geocachers who wish to include commercial content in their free cache listings. What's extra cool about this particular promotion is that Geocaching HQ has partnered with a very outstanding individual geocaching family. I don't recall that ever happening before. If you live within traveling distance of one of these events, I highly recommend taking the opportunity to meet or reconnect with Monkeybrad and Scoot the Frog. I've valued their geo-friendship since meeting them in 2004. Quote Link to comment

Event Caches, like other geocaches, will only be published if they meet the commercial cache guideline. It should be obvious by your first post that these events are not run-of-the-mill. If HQ publishes something, then there's a good chance that the regular Guidelines do not apply. Nothing new here. Promotions have been a part of this for a while now. Mostly as trackable give-aways. This is something new. The businesses you noted didn't host the event. I've never seen a cacher promote a business they own with an event or in this case a nationwide series of events. This I believe is new. Quote Link to comment

I solved a very difficult puzzle cache that he, and Robert Lipe (developer of GPSBabel, which is used by GSAK "under the hood") and one other cacher. It had the most elaborate red herrings including a brochure with a photo of MonkeyBrad in it. Or is it a red herring. Quote Link to comment

+fuzziebear3
Love MonkeyBrad! I look forward to seeing him again at MidWest GeoBash this year. In MWGB case, that was an already existing mega-event that he will be at with the promotion. Quote Link to comment
