Lab cache finds disappear

Recommended Posts

I completed 10 lab caches in Edmonton alberta today. I even looked at the leaderboard to see i finished 16th overall. Tonight (11 hours later) i was looking at my cache finds and it wasn' t adding up. I then looked at my cache finds by type only to see that i had 10 rather than 20. I then went to the labcache page and none of them were logged. I re logged them all but what happend?

don't mind him, he is often not helpful when its about puzzles or lab caches.

I only see 10 lab caches for the Alberta event, not that I am there to do them, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once.

Have you done other lab caches before to make it 20 instead of 10? Perhaps see what other folks who do them have showing up. I can't personally see what lab caches you have found, only you can fight forest fires, er, sorry, only you can see your own lab caches finds, I just see your total, 20.

In your profile, I see "Lab cache 20"

Yes i also did 10 lab caches for the living skys mega in Saskatchewan. Of course its showing 20 as i had to re log them all. Its more of a how could they just disappear after getting conformation?

There may be something buggy with regard to Lab Cache logging. For the recent geocaching adventures lab caches, it was apparent that many were able to log them (by entering the correct keyword) even if they did not visit the locations. I was able to guess the answer for one of them and entered it the form. I immediately deleted the lab cache in my profile, but when I looked at the "leaderboard" page for the lab caches for the location in New York, it said that I had "found" 1 out of 4 and indicated my position on the leader boards. Even though I deleted the "find" the system still thinks I found one of the lab caches.

This may have nothing to do with why you had lab cache go missing from your profile but might explain why it's showing 20 instead of 10.

From the introductory text, lab caches are "a way for us to innovate and test new ideas". That implies experimental, which implies not fully developed, or debugged, which implies no promises of full functionality. When they were first announced, I believe they made that a bit more clear.

If it was a fully developed feature, why would they keep "lab" in the name?

I completely agree. I like the idea of lab caches conceptually, but where I think GS went wrong was partially integrating some of that functionality into the way existing cache types are handled. As an experimental method to innovate and test new idea, I don't think should have ever counted as cache finds. As souvenir happy as GS has become (as least, for souvenirs that aren't for finding caches in countries/regions), I think it would have been more sense to award geocachers with a souvenir for participating in the experiment rather than only partially counting in the statistics in our profiles.

Personally, I'm happy to participate in an experiment which tests new ideas but won't be logging any lab caches because they're only partially implemented into my statistics.
