General Geocache newbie

Hey guys, I am very new to geo-caching (only did an hour or so). I was wondering are there any free reliable GPS apps you can download for a Samsung phone to help find caches. I was hoping this could be a free hobby rather than spending money.(Though not adverse to spending a little). I managed to find 2 or 3 last time I went but that is because I looked at the map and knew the town really well so just kinda stumbled on them eventually. Would really like to start this properly using a GPS so I can be more effective when visiting other places.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello from a fellow Newbie!

Here's a link that tells you about the apps. https://www.geocachi...account/welcome

There is a free app and another app that costs 9.99 - but I think I read somewhere that the free one is no longer being updated. The fun factor far outweighs the cost in my opinion!

Actually, it's the paid app that is no longer being updated. There are still some features in the paid app that you can't do with the free app (trackables, offlne lists) but once those are implemented in the free app, the paid app will go away.

If you want free and feature packet try GDAK. Once you load caches in it you don't need any data. You will need to download offline maps though. If you have a dataplan you can just download caches and maps will be downloaded for you location (google maps, ...)

In addition to Groundspeak's apps (described above), there are a number of third-party apps for Android:

http://www.geocaching.com/mobile/partners/

I use CacheSense, which has a free trial version. But after a month, it tells you to upgrade. Upgrading to the full version is still only $5 though. You could spend more than that on gas and parking for one geocaching trip, if you drove to a nice regional park in your area.

But any of the third-party apps will work better if you're a premium member ($30/year). That's a limitation of the interface provided by Groundspeak, not a limitation of the apps themselves.

The only app I've ever used on my Android since the very first day I started caching was c:geo. It doesn't get more free than that and it's updated on an almost weekly basis.
Of course, using c:geo (or any other app) to scrape the geocaching.com web site for data does violate the terms of use.

Other than the fact that some people have said that in the forums, just how is the ordinary person (i.e. not a computer expert) looking for apps supposed to know that? (Of course we all know that everything that anyone says in the forums is the absolute truth and must be followed exactly.) I have no idea what "Use any robot, spider, scraper or other automated means to access our services" means and wouldn't know how to do it if I tried. As far as I know, c:geo is just an app, no different than any other app. If GS doesn't want me to use any specific app, they'd better mention it by name.

That is the only negative about c:geo because it is the best geocaching app out there for basic members.
