Special geocaching days 2015

Recommended Posts

... there must be someting special on 02MAY as you can earn a souvenier. But I have no more Info.

That's the 15th anniversary of when "selective availability" for the USA's GPS satellites was turned off, making accurate GPS coordinates available to the world for meaningful non-military use. Like the very next day, May 3rd 2000, when the very first geocache was hidden!

I have not seen an announcement on May activities. Are we doing anything along the lines of 10 Years! events from 2010?

WWFM (World Wide Flash Mob)

13 June 2015

I hope they're all 30 minute flash mobs.

The ones published after the Guidelines change are.

Ones published prior to the change are probably "true" flash mobs.

Only in the GS World are flash mobs more than 15 minutes in length.

that don't move from the specified coordinates.

Define specified coordinates. If a event was submitted which had published coordinates at a shelter in a city park, I suspect that reviewers would not demand that everyone remain with 15 meters of the shelter for the duration of the event.

Flash mobs have a specific start and end time. That doesn't mean that the Geocaching event can't start before or end after the flash mob activity. It would be reasonable for people to be able to leave the building for a group photo after the flash mob and have that be part of the Geocaching event.

Let's not get sidetracked into another debate on event publishing standards, OK? This thread is about "special geocaching days." And in any case, if "special geocaching days" is defined as "official Geocaching.com special days, marked with souvenirs" then the WWFM discussion is off-topic.

You're right. I apologize.

It is? This is on my souvenir page.

I went to a lot of trouble to get this souvenir last year (in Leuven):

Answering those who posted about World Wide Flash Mob day, there will not be a souvenir for the next one. While there's no longer an official "partnership" between Geocaching HQ and WWFM/Podcacher, that doesn't mean the end of the fun at all. Those who enjoy flash mobs are welcome to organize one. The recent 30 minute minimum length for event caches should be kept in mind. In practice, it shouldn't make a difference, as geocachers at flash mobs tend to arrive early for setup and planning, and then stick around after the formal activity, photo, etc. in order to socialize.

ATTN Keystone:

what exactly is the rule to obtain a souvenir on 02MAY15?

Just a log of any cache or only a specific category as on Pi-Day (Mystery and/or Event)?

I must be missing something, but I can't figure out which of these scenarios is true about the May 2/May 3 souvenir.

#1: You can earn two souvenirs, one on May 2 to mark the satellites, and one on May 3 to mark the first placement.

#2: You can earn one souvenir, but you must find a geocache on May 2 and another on May 3 in order to earn it.

#3: You can earn one souvenir, and you can find a geocache on either May 2 or May 3 in order to earn it.

Anybody know?

From reading the blog, it seems like a modified version of #3.

There's only one souvenir to begin with, and you can find a geocache on either May 2 or May 3 in order to earn it.

However, the bit that says "Unlock details of your 2015 geocaching mission by reading the souvenir’s description." implies to me that this is just the start of what will be this year's big summer project (like the "7 Souvenirs" last year and the "31 Days" the year before). Once you get the souvenir, it'll tell you what to do next? That's what it seems to me to be saying.

But the Blog posting says "Celebrate 15 Years of Geocaching on May 2nd and 3rd by finding any geocache or attending any geocaching event."

Note the "and" - this would suggest that you have to find a cache on both days.

I agree with marshajean that the requirement(s) and outcome(s) are not clear.

Probably NOT what you were looking for, however, there are a few opportunities to create event caches themed around the early history of this hobby we are engaged in.
