+The Fieldwicks
Hello, My local school runs a festival day and I have been asked if it would be possible to set up some sort of cache series on the school grounds for the day. If I set up official geocaches then it wouldn't work as the grounds are not open to the public, and they would only be active for one day. Does anyone know of a way to set up temporary caches? Is there a GPS tracking app that works similarly to the geocaching app? Has anyone tried something like this before? Any thoughts, views, suggestion, advice totally appreciated! Thanks in anticipation Jennie Quote Link to comment
+on4bam
If you have software like GSAK you could just create caches using your own data (name, code D/T rating, description... ) and then export them as GPX files. These files could be imported in a GPS or any app that allows import of GPX files. Since what you want to do will never be published on GC offline creation seems the only way to go. +speakers-corner
My brother has done something similar to this for the Scouts. He copied the html-code for a Cache and then edited it to fit what he was doing and then printed off copies of it. Im not sure if you can do something like this with GSAK in an offline Modus. You could then create gpx-files from what youve done. David Quote Link to comment

Just creating an cachepage and supplying printed copies + a GPX file with WPs is the easiest thing to do but the GSAK method creates a more "real" feel. Quote Link to comment

Thanks in anticipation Jennie Unless you wish to spend time loading and setting up apps on various phones, I'd suggest trying Google Maps. A lot of Android phones already have that App ready to go, and it may be installed on iPhone. Type coords into Google Search, and the results of a search will place a point on the map. People can then open the Maps App. It's just a place marker, but it may be fine for your purpose. Provide a sheet with coords and hints, and set people loose on the caches. Since it's all within one property area, a printed map could work well, too, with no Apps at all. Edited April 21, 2016 by kunarion Quote Link to comment

Funny that a school would ask someone to place geocaches, without it presented/offered to them first. Apps and smartphones for many, I kinda agree with kunarion - printed maps, and maybe form groups. You don't say what grades, but younger kids may well have more fun with a scavenger hunt. Quote Link to comment
+The Fieldwicks
Thanks for all the replies. The less techy the better really. I didn't know Google maps takes coordinates, I'll try that out. The festival day is run by a fundraising group and it was through a conversation about caching that this idea was born. We are aiming it at the teens age group so most should have a phone that can run Google maps. So I'm thinking of a printed sheet with coordinates that can be entered into Google maps would work well. BOBBLES WORLD TOUR
I agree with the map method kunarian suggested. All phones have G maps. Just type in the numbers like this.. with the spaces and dots as such for maps to recognise. N 51 31.650 W 000 08.633 A good hint etc will make for a fun search. I've been using this method for years. No gps when in town..just coords and a hint. Edited April 22, 2016 by Joluc Quote Link to comment
