Gadget Cache

Neat! You sure solved that fast. It's almost like you knew what the solution was beforehand...

What powers the 3rd part and how long could a body expect it to last?

Also, I would hope that I never find it. The first thing I would probably do is drop the nail and never be able to find it again.

Part three is a 12v solenoid powered by a 9v battery (hidden). It's only powered when someone completes the circuit (touches the correct bolts), so the battery should last for a while.

I like it, nice job!

I have two minor suggestions, based on Pork King's comment. They both have to do with making it less likely that parts will get misplaced.

First, use a longer nail, and add a stop mechanism, maybe solder a washer to the nail, to prevent the nail from being completed removed. This might mean that the eyelet would need to be relocated.

Second, attach the magnet, and the jumper wire to the container. Maybe put the magnet on a string, and use a tie strap to affix the center of the wire to the side of the box.

Again, great job, and thanks for sharing. This has given me a couple of ideas to build my own.

I seen your video. What a great concept. Hope you don't mind if I borrow the idea from you. I'd like to make a box with 5 doors. Instead of opening them 1 2 3 4 5, the order will be 1 2 5 4 3. I also like your idea of using a solenoid to unlock the door. I don't want to be identical, so I'd like to make door #4 open with 8 switches. You have to switch them in a certain order Up/Down or Left/Right. In order to open the door, you push a button. Correct and green light goes on and door unlocks. Wrong and a loud car horn beeps. I got that idea from a friend of mine. :)

I trust you are joking about this part! Such a noise will certainly attract muggles in an urban/suburban area and would most unwelcome on a nice hike though the woods.

No worries. I have several gadget caches with Car horns in them. The first one is at a Tire Center where they fix cars. No one is the wiser if someone is geocaching. The horns are loud at the cache, but understand that it is inside a wooden box. Its not as loud 20 feet away, 1/2 at 40 feet, so on and so forth. I would never use one in an area that you do not want to attract attention. Gadget caches are easy to find, hard to open, so its common sense that you need to place it in the right location, and obviously, you need permission from land owners when placing.

I appreciate the concern though.

Wow, what a great cache. I wish I new more about electronics where I can build something like that. I'm pretty slick, but not that slick. Here is my cache that just got published and found today.

Its about a mile in the woods. There is a phone book there with numbers of famous musicians that you can call. (Fake numbers). But if users pick up the phone and hit a single number, for instance '0', they will hear a dial tone, button push, then ringing. After 2 rings, "Operator" by Jim Croce starts playing. If they press '1', then they hear, dial tone, button press, (so on so forth) and "One is the loniest number" by Three dog night starts playing. If they hit '8' then "Jenny, Jenny 867-5309" starts playing. If they hit '5' then the operator comes on stating all of representatives are busy, and puts them on hold. That's when the song "Payphone" by Maroon 5 starts playing. Every 15 seconds, the operator comes on thanking the person for their call, and a new song clip plays (for example "Call Me" by Blondie". After several clips and maybe 2 minutes, I come on the phone and give them a hint on how to get into the Gadget cache. I was hoping to get the actual bells working, but don't know enough to do that. Its only parts of a real payphone, button, coin return, etc... Everything else (the box) is wood, as well as the housing that it sits in.

After I had it complete, I found another unit that was more expensive that had a motion sensor on it. Would have been cool to use that to make the phone ring when a cacher approaches. Not sure what kind of battery that would take to make it last, so maybe its better that I had not thought of it before I had finished it. lol :P

Here's my latest gadget cache, GC6VB3R, "The Good Geocacher." In order to open the container, you need to be a good geocacher. This "machine" analyzes your geocaching goodness when you place a finger on the sensor. If you don't meet the criteria, the box doesn't open. Here's a video of how it works:

How do it know?!

Is it like the old McDLT containers that somehow knew to keep the hot side hot and the cool side cool?
