Puzzle caches and the 0.1mile rule

Recommended Posts

Just a quick question for clarification.

Does the 0.1 mile rule apply to the Puzzle co-ordinates, or the solved corrected co-ordinates?

thanks ;)

Oh, ok :(

guess i'll have to solve any nearby caches before working out hides then in future.

i'll have to pray that either they're not too clever, or I'm not too thick ;)

Following the links in Pup Patrols post, there is: http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=199 where it says:

Coordinate check with local reviewer

If you are still concerned about encountering the hidden parts of other geocaches, you may contact a community volunteer reviewer for a saturation check with your proposed coordinates. This should be done before placing the geocache container.

Create a geocache listing, with a title like "Coordinate Check". You can add additional waypoints if you'd like more than one spot checked (such as by using stages of a multi-cache).

Add a Reviewer Note explaining that the geocache is not in place and you would like a saturation check.

Either enable the geocache, or email your reviewer with the GC Code.

To find your local reviewer, check for a recent published log on a nearby geocache. Follow the link of the reviewer's name to their profile, where you can email them through the site. For more information on contacting reviewers, see Finding your Local Reviewer.

However... If you submit too many coordinate checks in the same area, the Reviewer may think you are trying to 'Battleship' the final of a cache...

I've had the issue before. With puzzles that go over my head, and I don't even know where to begin. I thought how to solve the puzzle had to be listed somewhere on the page? They rarely are.

Wouldn't that make the puzzle a bit pointless? You may as well detail the cache location and make it a Traditional.

Perhaps you mean that the reviewer is required to see the puzzle solution, although I assume that this is so that it can be checked for breaking any rules.

Wouldn't be much of a puzzle then.

If you are submitting a "?" for review, then you need to supply the method to solve to the Reviewer.

Guidelines

http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx

Mystery/Puzzle Caches

The information needed to solve this type cache must be available to the general community and the puzzle should be solvable from the information provided on the cache page.

For many caches of this type, the coordinates listed are not of the actual cache location, but a general reference point, such as a nearby parking location. Final coordinates must be less than 2 miles (3.2 km) from the posted coordinates. This allows the cache to show up on the appropriate vicinity searches and means that the mileage of Trackables passing through the cache will be reasonably accurate.

Add the final set of coordinates and any additional waypoints to the cache listing before submitting for review.

Before you submit the cache listing, post a Note to Reviewer with an explanation of how the puzzle is solved. This log will auto-delete on publication.

1.20. Mystery/Puzzle

http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=277

Puzzle Geocaches The geocache page provides a puzzle to be solved to generate coordinates for the geocache. The information to solve the puzzle must be on the page.

For Geocache Owners when designing Mystery geocaches

If the listed coordinates are not for the geocache location, the true geocache location must be provided as an Additional Waypoint.

It says:

"The information needed to solve this type cache must be available to the general community and the puzzle should be solvable from the information provided on the cache page."

I was saying from my experience most puzzles do not have this, as it doesn't say where to begin other than "solve the puzzle".

Maybe I'm not just very smart, but to me saying "solve this" when you don't know what "this" even is, means the information needed to solve the puzzle is not available on the cache page.

In generally, it's not a big deal. I just ignore them. There have been a few times, however, when they inhibit me from placing a cache, because my cache location is "too close" to a puzzle that I feel I am not being provided enough information to solve.
