+Mama<3Bear
I'm probably the newest member of this forum. I am very excited to go on my first geocaching adventure! I've been reading lots of posts and have visited the geocaching.com website. I've got a few questions about some of the terminology. I was able to find a website that explained many of the acronyms, so that was a huge help. But I'm not quite sure of some of the symbols I've been seeing on the Hide and Seek site. Could someone please explain the differences between the following caches? Traditional cache, Multi-cache (probably self-explanatory), Letterbox, Mystery cache (this one is throwing me because I see a lot of those symbols in a body of water near my home but the locations definitely seem to be on the land), Earthcache, and WhereIGoCache Thanks for all of your help! I'll do my best to keep my "newbie" questions to a minimum. Quote Link to comment

Multi-go to the coordinates get coordinates for next stage, continue till reach the cache. Letterbox-based on letter boxing, coordinates either take you to it or to where you start to use clues. There is stamp inside DO NOT TAKE THE STAMP! Mystery-generally a puzzle of some sort to get the coordinates. Earth cache-go to coordinates and answer the questions on the page to log a find. Wherigo-download the cartridge to phone or gps start at coordinates, follow clues, find the cache. Virtual-go to location and answer questions Event/mega/gigs/cito-gathering of cachers Webcam-go to coordinates and snap a picture with webcam on the page Lab-temp caches at mega events Hope that helps Quote Link to comment
+Gill & Tony
This link tells all the cache types. In a nut shell Traditional: A physical container containing a log (at least) The coordinates point at the physical container. Multi. The coordinates point at a location which has some mechanism for giving you another set (or partial set) of coordinates. This may be repeated several times until the final coordinates have a physical container (usually). Mystery. There are two flavours. In one case you have to solve a puzzle to find the coordinates. In the other you know the cordinates but you have to have completed a challenge related to caching before being allowed to log the find. Mystery caches often have coordinates in the middle of a a body of water to form a picture called Geo-Art. Earthcaches and Virtual caches do not have a physical container. In both cases you have to perform some task to prove you were at the site and for an earthcache that task has to involve a geology lesson. I'll leave others to explain Letterboxes and Wherigo Edit to fix spelling Edited January 15, 2015 by Gill & Tony Quote Link to comment

First up is the Help Center: http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php The second place to find lots of information is the Guidelines: http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx At the top of the home page, http://www.geocaching.com/seek/ is a tab titled "Learn". Hover over the drop down arrow, and click on "Geocaching 101" to be taken here: http://www.geocaching.com/guide/ That's enough reading to keep you occupied for quite a while. B. Quote Link to comment
