Converting Hddd°mm'ss.s" To Hddd°mm.mmm' ?

I am new at this GPS stuff and noticed there are diffrent formats for Lon/Lat's when entering waypoints into my GPS.

IE:

hddd°mm.mmm'

hddd°mm'ss.s"

hddd.ddddd°

Is there conversion calculators out there available for a Palm Pilot or windows98 that will help me to quickly convert to the format I am using in my GPS without having to switch my GPS formats arround every time I enter a location of a diffrent format?

If you have any links to some programs that will do this would you please post them for me.

Thanks!

Guy

ddd°mm'ss.s" -> ddd°mm.mmm'

Take the ss.s and divide by 60. That will become the decimal portion of mm.mmm.

ddd°mm.mmm' -> ddd.ddddd°

Divide mm.mmm by 60, that will become the decimal portion of ddd.ddddd.

Just think of a clock. How would you convert seconds into minutes. Dividing the seconds by 60. How would you convert minutes into hours (degrees)? The same way, dividing by 60.

For your PC an excellent app. is GeoCalc created by a fellow cacher, Fizzymagic.

Actually, thanks for asking your question. I discovered an update to GeoCalc that I didn't realize existed.

Cheers, Olar

Thanks PDOP'S and OLAR for the links some good programs there. I downloaded them and am playing arround with them. I think they will be great.

I sure went to the right place for help.

Much appreciated!

Excellent! Thanks for the lesson and the program link.

Does anyone know if there is a similar program that is compatible with Windows Mobile - tried that one on my Motorola Q and it is not.

In the interim, I have made an EXCEL spreadsheet that does the calculation quickly and accurately, can be loaded to your Windows Smartphone and anyone can download if from my site here:

I was going to edit my post above to note that I have updated that EXCEL spreadsheet so you can now use it to convert between DD.MM.SS; DD.MMMM and DD.DDDDDD it both directions. Handy to have when you are out in the field checking benchmarks. I checked on EDIT in the HELP section and it appears there is a time limit allowance for editing the posts.

The link is in the post above. Enter your data where the numbers are PINK.

A very easy way is to use your GPSr: Copy the coordinates to a waypoint on your GPSr, then go to "setup" and choose what ever coordinate system you want to change it to. The waypoint will then show what the converted coordinates.
