umpapa
I read somewhere that you can download free topo maps for Garmin products that are user generated. Do you know what sites share those maps? Is it a good idea to use those free maps with a Dakota 10? Many thanks! Quote Link to comment

Team Schroeder
Thanks very much for these sites! Does anyone recommend one over the other, or do the provide essentially the same maps? Thanks again. Quote Link to comment
+StarBrand
gpsfiledepot has mostly TOPO maps. The other link has routeable streep maps only. Quote Link to comment
GreenerGoodLife
Hi there! First off, thanks so much for all the assistance one finds on forums It really makes the internet worthwhile. Second, I have followed instructions on GPSfiledepot.com and am coming up short... I have downloaded two maps from this site (as well as both BaseCamp and MapSource) but when I right-click on the device and select "Install Maps", a window pops up to inform me that "No unlocked maps were found for this device." This is what happens in BaseCamp, so I downloaded MapSource and when I open the program it shows a blank grid instead of map. I am at a loss... Help!!! Quote Link to comment

+NYPaddleCacher
Thanks very much for these sites! Does anyone recommend one over the other, or do the provide essentially the same maps? Thanks again. I used to use maps from gpsfiledepot (and even created a few) early on but now mostly use the routable open street maps for Garmin. However, I travel a fair amount to places which are most likely not covered by a user created topo map in gpsfiledepot and have found that no matter where I go, I can hand pick which map tiles I'll need from the OSM maps. The map doesn't need to be one contiguous area. There may be some areas where a topo map would be very useful but I've found the OSM maps more than adequate. I keep a second micro-SD card for maps I need while traveling (the other has the commercial U.S. Topo maps from Garmin) and update it a necessary. Currently it has maps which covers most of United Arab Emerites, and a portion of central Ethiopia. In the past I created *one* map that had an area around Oslo, Norway, all of Copenhagen, Denmark and a portion of Sweden, and an area which covered Hamburg, Germany. Quote Link to comment
+MountainWoods
BTW, the forums on the GPSFileDepot site have very, very complete information and responsive moderators. I'm not putting you off as far as help here. (Perhaps someone can help here.) But there is more concentrated help on the specifics of GPSFileDepot maps w.r.t. Garmin units at that site.
