161 m Guideline

The guidelines state: "Physical elements of different geocaches should be at least 0.10 miles (528 ft or 161 m) apart."

Typically we assume this as 2-dimensional map distance. What if a geocache is 161 m away from another geocache, but in the vertical direction? The map would show them much less than 161 meters apart, but in reality they could be much further away than that.

A less extreme example: Two caches are 150 m of map distance away from each other, but you have to gain 60 m of elevation between cache A and cache B. Therefore the caches are actually 162 m apart (Pythagoras Theorem).

Just looking for a little more insight into the guideline.

Thanks!
