+PJ²:
I have a Garmin 400t handheld GPS unit. I'm still learning how to use it and apply it to all that premium membership affords me. I would like some help with when I run a pocket query, and then select several geocache waypoints. After selecting the geocache waypoints, when I click on Download Waypoints it saves it as a .LOC file in my computer. How do I get this information from my PC into my GPS? Does it need to be converted to a GPX format, and how do I do that? Is there a way to save it directly to my GPS unit? Quote Link to comment
+StarBrand
Best way to do it is use Pocket Queries. Here is a fine tutorial: http://www.markwell.us/pq.htm Then take the GPX file that is the result of a PQ and load that into the [drive]:\garmin\GPX folder on the oregon - the device will read the file automatically. A GPX contains all of the text from a listing page including descriptions and hints and 5 logs. A LOC file contains only the basics like coordinates and name. +WeightMan
My first suggestion would be to use Pocket Queries to get the information. I would also suggest you get GSAK and use that to select the caches to be loaded. Is this a Colorado or an Oregon? I understand that there are some differences beside the touch screen between the two. GSAK has a macro to load the Colorado. I don't think it works too well on the Oregon and the good folks over there are working on the problem. Quote Link to comment

My understanding is the Colorado will handle a PQ directly...meaning, download it from email and drop it onto the Colororad (think of the Colorado as a Flash Drive)...the Colorado will do the rest of the work for you...(See StarBrand's Post) Quote Link to comment
+Team Woodward
Yep, I just unzip & extract directly from the email to the gpx folder on the 400T. Works great. Quote Link to comment
+PJ²:
OK I can get the PQ to work. What I'm saying is that if I pull up a page full of caches near to my location, there is a box to the right of each one that I can check. At the bottom of the page it says "Download Waypoints" When I download them they are saved to my PC as a LOC formatted file. I can't seem to be able to do anything with that. My question is this. Can you convert an LOC type file to a GPX file, and how? Seems that since Groundspeak is set up for Garmin GPSR's that there ought to be a way to send the lot as GPX files and not LOC files. +boda
Can you convert an LOC type file to a GPX file, and how? StarBrand stated the differences between the two file types. What you are wanting to do is change a file with 2 - 3 pieces of information into one that has much more. Sorry, but I don't know of any way you can do that. If you are trying to get just a few caches downloaded at a time, you can use the "Send to GPS" function on the cache page. You download them one at a time, and they are each an individual GPX file on the GPS. You will need to download Garmin's free Communicator program if you don't already have it. Quote Link to comment
+JPatton
It sounds like you are previewing the PQ. When creating the query, select a day of the week for it to run. You'll receive an email with an attachment. Un-zip the attachment and copy it to the /gpx folder on your gps. Quote Link to comment

Yeah, that's not the Pocket Query. It's just the preview. When you download from that page, it will be .LOC files not .GPX files. On the PQ page, select a day for it to run and then you will get the email with the actual PQ file attached to the email. Edited September 20, 2008 by Motorcycle_Mama Quote Link to comment
