Ideas for Geocaching swaps

I like small plastic toys, like this stuff:

I mostly avoid anything that would get damaged if it got wet (although the need for this depends on the quality of the cache container and how well finders reseal it). Metal can rust, some materials can rot or mildew, and paper can disintegrate.

What would you want to find in a geocache?

I leave polished stones such as tigers eye, hematite, jasper, quartz, lava, fossilised algae, jade etc. I purchase them at $1 each from a lapidary club & have about 20 different types. I don't leave them in all caches though, just the ones I consider worthy. Seldom take anything. Occasionally I leave my Path Tag.

I just put out a new full-size ammo can cache.

To load it, I went to the local 'Dollar Store' and bought:

  •
  • A fancy screwdriver with a selection of bits in the handle,
  • A 12 foot Tape Measure,
  • Two Night-Lights: one "Little Mermaid" and one "Capt. America" and
  • A kitchen thing (I forget what, exactly) that I put in a zip-lock bag.

Five bucks; great starter swag.

Depending on how big the container is, I will leave a "signature" wine cork (local winery cork, sometimes with my geoname writen on it, sometimes not. A friend gave me small wine bottle charms that you can use to make earrings or other jewelry and they are quite small, and fit in a lot of different containers. Just a little something to say I have been there and found the cache! The corks and the charms, at least locally, are my "signature" items.

My signature items are clear flat marbles with one of a kind designs... You can see a picture here Link to Swag Pics

I would love feedback as to whether or not you would like to find something like this in a cache and keep it...

I would definitely keep something like this; however, I do not like finding business cards or playing cards. They take up a lot of room and don't seem to be very "fun" to keep. But that could be just me. My son loves finding army men and things like gears. My daughter loves finding charms and fairy bottles. They both love to keep pennies, nickles, dimes and foreign coins. My husband has a thing for rubber ducks LOL

Also, kids' rub-on tattoos do NOT hold up well in caches, nor do stickers. In the heat and cold they come "unstuck" from the backing and then lose their ability to stick completely.

FYI I have found "floating charms" on Amazon which are tiny enough to fit in all but the smallest of nano containers (easily fit in metal bullet caches). VERY cute and full color. You can get 50 for less than $15.00.

I first saw "floating charms" ("living lockets"), at a gun show of all places :anicute:. One thing you may notice is that cachers may be choosy about what they may trade for. Since you're placing a wide variety of designs, you're doing fine! That gives people a choice. I make a variety of things, and I sometimes bring them to Events to trade for stuff. Cachers will paw through my items, all bored, until ... "OOOH! An OWL!!", or whatever it is they collect. You know, the exact same item as all the others, but there's an owl picture printed on that one. :D

I rest my case. :anicute:

Hmmm... Cold hard cash might be nice... Gold bars, gems, winning powerball tickets... whatever you have lying around...

Don't forget: trade up, trade even, or don't trade! B)

I don't trade often, but I have a small bag (aka a man purse) that I keep my GPS in with a baggie full of foreign coins and some small bills that I've picked up during my travels.  Although they don't have a lot of monetary value they're not something most geocachers come across every day.  For example, I've got a 5 Kroner  coin from Iceland sitting in front of me that's worth about 5 cents (US).  Most people might not pick up a nickel off the ground may never have seen an Icelandic 5 Kroner coin.

If you want little silly stuff, the Dollar Spot at Target. Get little things for a dollar. It might seem silly to some, but I am here in Hawaii, and those little dollar things that are silly to us, mean a ton to those on the mainland. You can approach it like that, for your neck of the woods :)

I agree.

When we used to load up on swag, we'd hit the bargain section at Target and find kid's first aid kits, multitool kits, and even  umbrellas for a buck.

'Course finding caches  large enough for umbrellas these days gets tougher.    :)

I don't get much time to go and find new caches very often but I have my own nearby. One thing I've found most have in common so far is that people tend to just leave junk in them. Stones, twigs, pennies, even when they leave something it tends to be old & worn/dirty or perishable (paper/textile).

I like to leave bits of "Geo-treasure" that I make, mostly from brass but sometimes from aluminium or stainless.Finders can either keep them or leave them in the next cache they find :)

(Tried to attached photos but it just said "Uploading..." for half an hour solid)

If your items are like this from your Gallery, they're very cool!  I think you should you sign them ("vision" or whatever, so people know who makes them).
