Rough start?

Hey guys,

We are kinda new on the geocaching frontier but a while back we placed a cache (GC74JHJ) and it hasn't gotten much attention. We are up to 2 months now and only one find (which was right after we placed it). I'm wondering what we did/ are doing wrong. I realize that it isn't in a prime location but other caches around it (GC39YZR, GC39YKD, GC42QGX) have been found already in the month of June. If y'all could help us understand we would really appreciate it! :D

Thanks!

I see that your cache is in a nice-looking wooded area, the "Ray Harral Nature Park." Consider doing some self-promotion by adding a description of the Nature Park to your cache description. Are there trails there? Educational programs? A playground? Talk about the reasons why someone would want to visit here.

I wonder whether geocachers are nervous due to the proximity of the park, right next to the school to the north. You might assure readers that it's cool to be there, as it's a park, not the "woods behind the school." Caches are not allowed at or near schools.

My guess is that it's the location. That nature park has two other caches (GCG1EG and GC1QTV9) that have not been visited after your cache was placed, and the latter is a multi with DNF logs.

The other caches that you mentioned are park-and-grabs, so comparisons to your cache would not be valid.

Besides what Keystone mentioned, I'd suggest adding a parking waypoint to your cache. It looks like there's a small parking lot within 100 feet of your cache? If that is public parking, rather than part of the nearby schools, then it might help to mention that. Perhaps add something like 'This cache is hidden near one of the trailheads for the Ray Harral Nature Park. There is a public parking lot nearby.'

Good luck.

I doubt very many geocachers even think about the school being close by. I see it's a 1.5/1.5 but the cache is, or at least looks, to be a bit harder to get to than some of the park and grabs in the area. People these days don't want anything too difficult so pretty much avoid caches that don't look to be easy.

I have quite a few caches that go months and sometimes years between finds. These days most cachers want the quick finds. So the ones that take some effort to reach are largely ignored.

You seem to have a nice cache in a nice spot so you aren't doing anything wrong. There are still people out there who will enjoy them. You will get finds eventually.

If you want a lot of finds, slap a Hide a Key on a dumpster behind the local 7-Eleven

If it was me I would probably postpone seeking your cache until the multi's status was resolved so I didn't need to make two trips to the area. (Assuming of course I hadn't previously found the other caches.)

What others said...it's always a little suspect to me when almost nothing is written on the cache description. It doesn't take much time and often does go a long way to encourage people to visit.

Also, I see that you didn't actually hide the cache until after one person went looking for it. I'll be blunt here: don't submit the cache for publication until AFTER you have placed it. This is a pet peeve of mine and is also a red flag for many people. They may assume the CO doesn't really know what they are doing and may be hesitant to visit the cache until others have been to find it.
