garmin oregon 700 vs 750

Recommended Posts

so im looking into upgrading my gps to either the garmin oregon 700 or 750, the only differences i see is the 750 comes with a camera which is no big deal to me since i always have my phone on me, but the 750 also comes with 4gb of memory as opposed to 1.7gb on the 700, and what im wondering is the extra 100 bucks worth the 2.3gb of memory?

basically will the 700 perform slower or maybe lag because of the decreased memory?

lastly is there anyway to download the us topo 100 from my 64st on to my pc and then onto the oregon?

thanks

Spend your money on a 16GB SD card. That will give you lots of room for extra maps, etc. I don't know if you can copy the Topo 100 map to another device or not. But why bother with Topo 100 when you can get 24K free topo maps from GPSFileDepot.com, and nice OSM routable maps from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ ?

The camera isn't that great... a poor 8 meg is one thing..bad sensors as well. You can get the Micro SD Card and send the maps to there via Mapsource or BaseCamp....Buy the 700..get free maps..or find a Topo from Garmin that isn't locked. I have an 2008 and a 24k that isn't locked.. comes that way... the 2008 is just as good as the newer ones really. I've compared them all.. heck I have them all.. even the newest Topo that comes with the 700 or 610T...

Garmin has locked the 100k topo to the unit. Transferring it won't work.

You won't miss the extra memory if you purchase an sd card. It won't be any slower either.

I have the 750 and in my experience it takes stellar photos that are better than my phone's. It may be a stronger commentary of my phone but seriously, takes fine pics. The other reason I purchased the 750 is for the flashlight. I'm surprised how handy it is to have this as a primary or backup light for navigating at night.

I'm pretty much with JohnCNA, but 16GB cards are so small now that they're in the bargain bin.

If you're in an area that's well served by OSM and/or you use your phone for answering "where shall we eat/stay" decisions, there's just little reason to pay for Garmin maps. Contribute back to OSM and share the benefits.

For what it's worth, I replaced the card I had in my Oregon 600 (8GB class 4) with a 16 GB class 10 and my PQ files write to the card faster than they do to the onboard memory. I'm not really sure why that should be the case. Not yet sure if maps will install faster as I simply cloned the card before installing it and haven't installed any new maps yet. So, yeah, the size of the onboard memory should not be the determining factor to whether or not you spend the extra $80 or $100 on the x50 units.

Hopefully the camera is good as you say in the Oregon 750. I only have used the camera in the Monterra and assumed it would be the same in the Oregon. The Monterrais pretty bad compared to my tg-820 Olympus.. especially the video ... doesn't have a great processor.

I wouldn't compare the camera on the 750 to a point-n-shoot. It's not really in the same playing field. However, it's comparable to a good phone camera and I'm glad I always have it with me (because I always have my GPS on me).

One trend I've noticed in millennials, some are pushing back against being connected all the time. Albeit my sample size is fairly small, I see more and more of them with dumb phones. A GPS doesn't violate this code of anti-connectivity ethics. The only reason I mention this is because I feel there will always be a market for what some consider redundant or useless in light of a smartphone.

I find the Monterra camera not as good as my samsung s5 even.. blur's right out when doing videos and exposer's aren't great... don't use it anymore.. take either the phone or tg 820
