Position formats for Garmin GPS in Greece

Hi, I live in the UK and I am off to Crete shortly and suddenly thought will I need to change my position format from British Grid? If so, what do I change it to as I couldn't see a 'Greek' option!

The format you will use will depend entirely upon your use model. What will you be DOING in Greece with a GPS receiver such that you would care about a particular format? Where will you be obtaining your location information?

These days, I think you'll find most currently published locations (even those in the UK) using lat/long are using WGS84 datum in one of the three common notations (dms, dd.ddddd or dd mm.mmm).

Thank you for your response, I have a Garmin 600 I will be hiking and geocaching while out there and was concerned that 'British Grid' would not be relevant for my downloaded coordinates or to define my position. Or is that only when you have OS maps loaded on your GPS? ?

For geocaching use hddd°mm.mmm, otherwise UTM UPS; other formats are only necessary when using paper maps (all settings: Oregon 600/650 setup)

Set the datum to WGS84, and co-ord format to ddd mm.mmm .

 

If you need maps you can get OSM maps from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

If all you are doing is downloading coordinates, it does not matter. The settings on the GPS do not affect anything.

One assumes you are not already trying to cache with "British Grid" enabled, since entering coordinates for mutli-caches and the like would be rather problematic.

 

Whatever ... If your GPS is configured such that you are getting acceptable geocaching results in the UK, that won't change anywhere in the world.

Since you are a Premium Member you can do a PQ of the entire island.
