Am I missing something?

I have Garmin Oregon 600. I picked geocaching and clicked "write" to my GPS. I turned on my GPS, and clicked "Geocaching" I am wondering why it doesn't show up on the list? Am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated!

Did you verify that the cache GPX file arrived on the Garmin?

If the cache is a great distance away (more than ~60 miles? Something like that), it won't automatically be shown.

If the file is not in the /Garmin/GPX folder of the GPSr, place it there manually. This info is for paid members, so use the "LOC Waypoint File" button instead of the GPX File" button which is grayed-out (and ignore the info about "Pocket Queries").

Download the GPX file from Geocaching.com. Not "Send To", use the "GPX File" button on a cache page. For a zipped Pocket Query, unzip the file, and you should now have at least one “GPX” file.

Plug the Garmin into the USB port of the computer.

Find the Garmin as a [DRIVE] or [storage device] and open it;

Therein, locate a file folder named something like Garmin/GPX/;

Click, drag and drop (or copy) the downloaded GPX file(s) to that [DRIVE]:Garmin/GPX/ folder.

Right-click and select Eject, unplug the Garmin;

Go Geocaching.

(From Gitchee-Gumee's excellent instructions)

I forgot to mention: When click send to my GPS, there is a pop up screen "Garmin Communicator Plugin" (Personal info such as your location,activity and contacts could be accessed). So I clicked okay. Seem like every time when I select cache. it comes up like I just explained. Is this how it should be in order?

In that case, the Communicator worked. Now look carefully at the cache filters on the GPSr. The cache might be hidden from view.

Kunarion I look carefully search at the GPX folder - none shown GPSr.

I got Garmin Oregon 600 few days ago. Brand new

Please let me know if it is okay. I look up what I have in Imac system - Garmin Basecamp, Garmin Express, Garmin Map install, Garmin Map Manager, Garmin Express installer.dmg, 63243122.IMG, Base camp for MAC_463.dmg, not sure why I have three same list - Communication Playin for Mac_420_2.dmg and Garmin GPS control.plugin

Do you think it is possible that three same list Communication playing in for Mac_420_2.dmg may be a problem? Should I delete two so that way just run with one plugin?

What about --- Garmin basecamp should be deleted?

Thanks!

OK, then, Communicator does not seem to be working. I haven't tried to set it up on a Mac.

You should place the LOC file manually (see post #2). If that's OK, the next step will be to fix Communicator if you want to. But if you have the technical ability to fix that and keep it working, you could send files manually instead, which is simpler and gives you more control.

I tried the installation on my Mac to give a step-by-step approach. Maybe following it gives you an idea what might be missing for you.

It is based on GPX files as I'm premium member as well ... though I think I remember some certain drawback on the communicator method while I was basic member for some time in between: only the technical location data was transferred to the GPS, but the description and hints were not included, instead there was an 'encouraging text' to become premium member. Anyway, getting the location data on the handheld is already much better than error prone manual typing in.

So here's what I did:

  • I downloaded the Garmin communicator plugin CommunicatorPluginForMac_420.dmg
  • I opened that dmg and executed the installer
  • Safari was directed to a Garmin page to check the plugin: http://software.garmin.com/en-US/gcp.html
  • That page shows that the plugin was detected, but no devices found
  • I plugged in my Oregon to the computer by USB
  • Verified that the Oregon’s storage shows as disk in Finder (actually 2, one for the built-in storage, one for the SD card)
  • reloaded the page
  • the page shows 2 detected devices:

Devices Detected

* Oregon 450

* GARMIN_SD

  •
  • went to a cache page (GC529W9 in my case, just for reference to the file names)
  • selected Transfer to GPS
  • I get the question to trust the access of www.geocaching.com to the plugin —> Trusting (I get the text in German, so no genuine copy of the real text here)
  • I get a second dialog to allow access to the device —> Yes
  • the plugin dialog shows the 2 devices Oregon 450 and GARMIN_SD (which is the name I gave to the SD ‚disk’)
  • I select 'GARMIN_SD'
  • and press button [Write]
  • The plugin dialog confirms: Geocache GC529W9.gpx saved successfully

Result:

The file GC529W9.gpx (for this cache) is found via Finder on disk GARMIN_SD in directory /Garmin/GPX.
