Caches are"traditional" on website but "premium" on the app

Recommended Posts

I have just been introduced to geocaching anf dound some caches with my guide. He set the caches, they appeared as traditional on his phone, they are traditional when I view them on the website on my computer at home, but I have just installed the app and I cannot get access to those caches. They are listed as premium. The app information says that this is because they have a terrain or difficulty rating of more than 1.5. can anybody help please?

Traditional is for basic and premium. Basic members see traditional caches that are below a certain difficulty level and premium members see all traditional geocaches. Now im not sure why you can see it on the site and not on the app unless your not signing in with the same account on each device.

On the website, Basic Members can see all caches that are not Premium Member Only caches.

In the Geocaching-R app, Basic Members can only see traditional caches that are not Premium Member Only and are rated 1.5/1.5 or below.

A traditional cache is just a type of cache - where the final container with the logbook is at the posted coordinates. Traditionals can be of varying difficulty and terrain ratings, and can also be 'premium' or not, depending on the CO's wishes to only allow premium members to find them. Other cache types, multis/mysterys/letterboxes can also be premium or not....

use a a nonoffcial app and you'll see all the non subscription (called premium on the site) caches. the terrain restriction is placed on the official apps to squeeze you for the subscription bill.

If true, I think it's a real shame that standard caches are being called premium, instead of "advanced" like in the (now old, outdated) intro app.

That brings new folks here again with same old problems with the intro/paid apps, where few things are alike.

Just won't learn?

Sheesh...

As a basic member using the official Geocaching app, you can only access 1.5/1.5 or less traditionals - the most basic of caches.

However, if you were to use a handheld GPSr, loading caches from the site, you'd be able to access all caches, except those listed as "premium member only" by their owners.

- You'll know it really is a pmo cache when you can't enter that page. ;)

Those caches are called "Advanced" in the App, not "premium". And there's a brief explanation on the page of what Advanced means as it applies to the App. AND it explains how to view Advanced geocaches. AND there's a button to read more about it. This one's covered pretty well within the App, each time an Advanced cache icon is selected. :anicute:

As a business plan, maybe TPTB decided to present caches that are most likely to be found, as a way to test the Official App. Just to see that it works with one's phone. The next step, if you wish to have all the features is, pay the membership fee. As an App plan, it is the same as 99% of the "Free" Apps in the App stores, except that the amount you could pay to support the App on any day isn't unlimited.B)

App companies are selling their Apps. Groundspeak is selling the service.

Thanks !

I thought it'd be silly to change that now, but a poster above me claimed otherwise. :)

You have to buy the full app, or become premium. Isn't obvious that they're bribing you to buy? Before, the app was the Geocaching App. Now it's a grown up app. If they should do this, they should just make you require to buy an account, no matter what. I know it's just a game, and everybody should be able to do it. It's common sense. If pocket queries, filtering, and other stuff should be premium only, 'everything' should be. Most users, and I mean MOST. He's a secret: I don't know if you're allowed to do this, but:

SECRET!!!!!!!

You tap the cache you want to see, tap the button that says 'view geocaches in a list', you close the app, open it again, and it will show you the cache. It won't show you the description, so you have to open your browser, or something similar. It should work on yours, it works on my. I don't if this is a hack, (not really). Also, if you can: By a handheld GPS!!!

Hope this helped you, and 'inspired' you ! :)

Maybe other apps like 'Cachely' can give it to you.

There's no longer a full app to buy. There's just the single Geocaching® app, which is free.

As was mentioned earlier in this discussion, you'd be able to get around the restriction by using one of the other geocaching apps. The restriction for basic members only being allowed to view Traditionals with D/T of 1.5 or lower is solely on the Geocaching® app.
