PQ downloads as unknown file type

This may have been asked/answered already but i wasn't able to find it here. I was out of pocket for 10 days so don't know exactly when it started. My problem began somewhere around the 25th of March (thinking this might have something to do with the new release).

My pocket query email comes in as normal. I can download it to the computer but it now displays as a "file" and is not recognized by gsak. To get a query to work, i have to go to my PQ page, click on the "pocket queries ready for download", and download from there. Would sure be nice to get it from my email, any help would be appreciated.

Are you using GSAK V8 ?

It will download PQs directly, via the Groundspeak API, so no need to use the email links...

Yes, and i know about this. I've used this technique a few times but i'm used to, and would like to keep doing it, the old fashioned tried and true way. Well, guess it's not tried and true any longer. Ugh!

So, why does GS even give me an option of receiving an email with attached file if it can't be used? Looks like yet another change that has made things harder for some gc.com users. I figure this is just another step in the direction to phase out us old timers in order to bring in more phone users. <_<

I normally download pocket queries using GSAK, but after reading your post I decided to try using your method.

Please confirm that this is what you're doing: You request a pocket query, which generates an e-mail message. That message includes a link that says "Download now". When you click on that link, it takes you to the geocaching site and shows a dialog box for opening or downloading the file. You download the file to your computer, and at this point you get a file that GSAK doesn't recognize.

I just generated a pocket query and tried this. I wound up with a zip file that contains two files, one with the geocaches and the other with waypoints like parking coordinates. I then launched GSAK and loaded the file into a new database.

Everything worked as expected here. GSAK recognized the zip file and loaded the caches correctly.

Are you sure something hasn't changed with your security software? That's caused me problems in the past with downloaded files.

I'm not sure this is related, but clicking the "PQ Is Available" Email's "Download Now" link seems to randomly produce either the familiar "View Downloads" box or a blank Internet Explorer page. I can click the "Download Now" link again to randomly generate one or the other. I can select "Open" or "Save" either way, but that blank screen is new. Maybe it's just an Internet Explorer thing -- or something in Windows Mail. Maybe it's not what the OP is seeing, since I can't produce an unusual file, regardless. It works, just has a weird splash page. Also, GSAK isn't handling the file at all on my PC, I always use the built-in Windows file handling features. So I can't even guess how GSAK would react to one or the other "download" page.

I thought the OP meant that the file was an attachment to the email. So I created a PQ that generated a list of 5 caches, and still no attachment. I'm "downloading" the file from GS whether from the link in the email or from the PQ page on the web site.

More info about the unreadable "file" and how it is being delivered may be useful. I saw a post yesterday that seems to have the same issue as the OP, and now I'm really wondering what might be going on.

Oh shoot,, you are right,,, the email does not include an attachment these days.

It does include a "download now" link within the email, which is what i've used since the newly formatted emails changed a few months back. I usually click on that, then a "download to" window pops up along with a blank screen (i have no idea why or what it's for) as it gives no indication of downloading. Your last image shows view downloads and is something i've never witnessed.

The one thing that i'm doing different from most is that i'm still using AOL for my email. Still using Vista so 9 is the latest version of IE that is compatible. Yeaaaa, i know i'm living in the past! :o

As with several changes over the past couple of years, i'll just have to keep adapting.

Ok, not sure why, but i just tried downloading from a couple of different emails, including yesterday's that gave me trouble. This time, i ended up with gpx files. Still get the blank screen but i've gotten used to that. It's working now.

Thanks for the replies!
