Geocaching in Libya

Recommended Posts

I was working in Tripoli about 3 years ago for a couple of weeks and did a search for nearby caches. I recall the nearest was about 1500 miles away in the desert.... I decided not to go for it

So perhaps an opportunity for Tim to get his first cache then!

Right - he says that he bought the shirt from a charity shop with the badge already on it. States he isn't a Geocacher, but knows what Geocaching is.......

So a well respected new reporter who is representing the coutry as a new reporter, watched by millions is wearing a T shirt brought in a chariety shop..... hmmm I think not.. ;) I think he told a porky

I disagree. If he lives in Chelsea, Hampstead or certain bits of Brighton - wearing stuff he bought from a charity shop is actually the in thing to do.

NB He's also the only journalist who I actually take seriously. So I believe him. :)

I'm a journalist (not a telly one) and I bought my caching shirt in a charidee shop (Scope, if you care) too. I had to add my own patch though; a gift from Dalek Meat. I see no reason to doubt Tim's report but if he decides to look into caching because of interest stirred by his shirt... well, new recruits to the cause are always welcome :)

To be fair... what has he got to gain by lying about it?????

I know the media are scoundrels and usually not to be believed, but there ARE some that are ok!!!

Perhaps he feels that if he admits he is a geocacher then he could get in trouble with his employees for promoting another company - as Groundspeak is a private corporation!

So we have two competing explanations:

1) He bought the shirt in a charity shop, and didn't really know what the logo meant.

2) He is a secret geocacher, and doesn't want his employer and/or the general public to know. His cunning plan for keeping it a secret involved buying a shirt with a highly-visible logo, then wearing it ON NATIONAL TELEVISION. But his attempt at subterfuge was foiled by an eagle-eyed viewer... forcing him to fall back on an implausible story about visiting Oxfam.

I'm constantly amazed by the ability of the Internet to spawn conspiracy theories ;)

There seem to be two geocaches in Tripoli, although the one at the harbour has been reported missing.

Don't worry.

Once the Yanks move in there will be more caches than the forthcoming McD's and Starbucks.

Most disappointing... I thought you reviewers were supposed to be dedicated to geocaching
