Wherigo but with non-real maps and without GPS?

I'm curious to see if there's anything similar to Wherigo, but with maps not of this universe and without all of this GPS stuff. Something that can function similarly.

For example, let's say that I wanted to make a fantasy game revolving around an island. This island doesn't exist in our world, and my friends who I plan to show this game to won't want to get out of their seats. So I'd put together an image of the island I have in mind using Gimp. I'd then use that image as the map for my game.

It's an interesting idea you have, but I'd venture D&D would be more suited to what you have in mind than Wherigo. Wherigo is almost always tied to GPS location (there are a few exceptions), so a player must move around. Additionally, there isn't a way on any player app to supply your own map. Very interesting.

I'm already very interested in D&D. I'm planning on playing 5e for the first time with some friends, and someone was kind enough to get all three core books from Amazon.

Now I'm interested to look into how to make multiple parties in the same campaign work. Now I want to have two parties playing in the same campaign without knowing that others were playing until I bring them both to a session. That is interesting.
