Moving caches gone:

Recommended Posts

I have a list of targets for an upcoming trip to Saint Louis, and one of them was the moving cache in Forest Park. Just less than 20 minutes ago, I saw an e-mail from HQ stating that the cache had been archived (and also locked) and that the CO could convert the cache to a TB. Goodbye moving caches.

All of them archived. Their reasoning seems...reasonable. I don't agree with the 'no warning' thing, though. They should have disabled first, posted the option to convert, then archived any whose COs didn't respond or chose not to convert them.

...though I suppose that would have led to a huge mass of folks logging them at once.

It's a no-win.

I hadn't realized that traveling caches had been experiencing a disproportionate number of complaints and disagreements.

But I suppose that eliminates one of the reasons why people wanted to log multiple Find logs for a single GC code.

Just when I thought this game couldn't get any worse. They go and pull this sort of stuff. I have turned off the auto renewal. I'm not really mad about it because I have lost interest a wile ago,,,, Good luck and thanks for all the fish. Enjoy your parking lots folks

I honestly don't care either way. They've always seemed like TBs to me anyway. I was just surprised...and now I get to witness the hysteria all over again.

I agree here. They could have at least given the CO's a couple days warning to decide how they would handle it.

Almost all on watch, I'd bet maybe a quarter were still going by their mission.

Instead most were just passed along at events.

I agree, a Trackable does the same thing. :)

I had seen several of these on vlogger channels on YouTube, where someone would bring a moving cache to a mega event. This is where the TB option can come in handy.

Umm, one of the reasons that traveling caches were having problems is because a lot of them are just carried to events and have become pocket caches. Not sure how that's better than parking lot caches. I'll keep on enjoying caches by going out for a hike or traveling to an interesting new place.

Hello Mark,

Thank you for contacting Geocaching HQ. I'm sorry, but we cannot give an exception for YOSM. As you probably know, it is mislisted as a virtual and is really a locationless cache. If it had been listed correctly, it would have been archived long ago with all of the other locationless caches. It has had a very long life.

Fortunately for the YOSM fans in the UK, it is not being archived. None of the existing logs will be changed or removed. People who have already logged finds on it can continue to chase after it in each new location, but log with a note instead of a find. Newer geocachers that have not yet attempted it, will be able to log their first find on the listing, and continue to log visits via a note. None of the fun experience needs to change.

Kind Regards,

Throughout GC4C35 I've found a lot of good friends as I was able to get it via post from UK and took it to an Event. The Group of great Cachers around me lasts until today and has become a real good friendship all the way!! I'm crying about moving Caches are gone....

I thought it a little strange coming from an alternative geocaching site moderator where moving caches are still accepted as a cache type.

Matter of fact, the last cache I found was in a Walmart parking lot where vagrants panhandle. :o Man that was fun! :D

That wasn't the case for the YOSM & Brass Cap caches, both of which did require getting out for a hike, and I bet those two caches were the cause of far fewer complaints than the norm. It's sad that those two got caught up in the cull, espescially as Groundspeak had agreed a way that they could continue with the new ban on multiple finds.

Let's make better mistakes tomorrow.

Well, I was speaking to physical caches that move, of course. Hard to make a virtual into pocket lint. ;)

niraD and I cache in the same area, so I'm not telling niraD anything he doesn't already know, but for everyone else, the two moving caches in our area have been nothing but joys to everyone involved. Dang annoying that I'll never be able to find the second one.

But I suppose that eliminates one of the reasons why people wanted to log multiple Find logs for a single GC code.

Oh, I'm sure the fact that this fits into that other change is just a coincidence. Surely they have a real and actual reasons for taking these away beyond not having to deal with people complaining about the goofy restriction of not allowing multiple finds.

Umm, one of the reasons that traveling caches were having problems is because a lot of them are just carried to events and have become pocket caches. Not sure how that's better than parking lot caches.

I heard about moving caches being taken to events, but I never saw it. What I did see was a few moving caches with pleas in the description not to use them as pocket caches because GS archived moving caches that became pocket caches. So this particular issue couldn't have been the problem GS was solving since GS already had a procedure for it.

I'll keep on enjoying caches by going out for a hike or traveling to an interesting new place.

I had several enjoyable trips and hikes seeking the two moving caches in my area. Neither of them were ever handed to me.

I'd be interested in Waymarking if it was app-based/app-friendly and set up more like geocaching with live maps and the like. No game like that is ever truly friendly if it's only browser based.

Okay.

So I have no idea what your goal is here.

Are you trying to get people to talk you out of leaving? Not likely, given your clearly antagonistic attitude.

Are you trying to denigrate those of us who continue to geocache? Well, there is no need for anyone to tell you that we'd all rather just see you leave.

Are you trying to change the minds of the powers that be? Surely there is a much more productive and diplomatic way of doing that.

I've known of moving caches at events. Heck, there were a couple rumored to be at block parties. A poster earlier in this thread said that they received one in the mail. A long time ago, I received one in the mail. Don't shoot me! I justified it because the cache had gone missing and this was the replacement cache that the owner sent for me to place where I lived. But I felt uncomfortable about it.

I think that the longer things like that go on, the easier it is to become relaxed about it and for more violations to occur. Yes, owners can say that people should not take a moving cache to an event, but those people could still bring the cache to an event and just post nearby coordinates to make it seem that they had placed the cache and didn't really just have it in their pocket.

You can always get around things. It just gets to be too much of a headache to deal with the complaints and arguing and guideline violations after awhile.

Yes it is, but it works. Waymarking is a collection of photos, mostly vacation pictures, that can be uploaded when it's too cold to go geocaching.

Geocaching has evolved into a phone app game, Waymarking never was popular and never will be, but like geocaching it can take you to some interesting locations, or the nearest McDonalds. :D

I have an Android app for Waymarking that I never released. But it's really just a wrapper around my mobile site (https://geotrailsw.com/wm/) and they are both fragile as they scrape (with permission) the site to work.

For GC43F3, Brass Cap Cache, why did they archive it? Could they not have simply allowed it to be a non-moving cache at a location chosen by the cache owner. This is a Virtual Cache with such a great history and the most found of any cache in North America. Plus the cache page is locked so that those of us that are upset can't even add a note.

Good grief, that's almost politician levels of untruth !

I know the usual suspects will pile tediously on and trumpet about how YOSM was not local to them, er , I meant, not in line with their infallibly correct view of how we should all cache (and just in case you missed it, that was sarcasm lads , OK ?) but regardless of the meaningless noise, it is a sad day for UK and Canadian caching, for trust in Groundspeak, and for the C.O.s of those suddenly non-caches.

Ooh look, a time travelling fragment of 'guidelines' dated 2027 just fell through a wormhole onto my computer , it says :

"By 2027 fewer than 100 caches remained active. Because the number of complaints and disagreements over these few caches were disproportionate to their number, Geocaching HQ decided to archive them."

Hopefully, one of the Higher-Ups will realize that the lackey made an error, and unarchive them. The lackey probably ran a program that identified all caches with numerous coordinate changes, and archived them all. The promise that you were given should be good enough! Grandfathering promised!

And they were definitely NOT locationless caches. Locationless caches only permitted one find per location. These were Virtuals with multiple locations. Example of a Locationless is: "Find a street sign with your name on it." My friend Jesus had to travel fifty miles, to Carmel, New York, to find a street sign with 'Jesus' on it. And, only one geocacher would be permitted to log that street sign. Has nothing to do with YOSM or Brass Caps.

I'm guessing that 99% of my WM's have never and will never be visited, but I'm past that point now. Waymarking is more about sharing interesting locations than actually visiting posted WM's. :anibad:

I did find 3 BM's over the weekend that had not been recovered since 01/01/1956, and yes I am drafting them up as WM's. :D I'm not a "professional" Benchmarker, but I enjoy looking for them and posting them on my Flickr account where they get 10x the views that the same photo gets on the Waymarking site. :)

There goes g.S.F.R?T., a local cache with a long and honorable history that people enjoyed. The idea was to leave a magnetic strip, with a "ticket" on it, at a location in the SF Bay Area. As far as I know it was never pocketed it at an event. I used to find it from time to time and always tried to think of unique locations -- places that I wanted at least one person to see. It had slightly more flexibility than a normal cache since the spot only had to last for a single find.

At one time, I repaired and replaced the "ticket" with the CO's permission when the magnet had problems. I had not found it in a long time, but with the recent logging change I was thinking of moving it to an appropriate spot and writing a note.

Groundspeak never fails to surprise me. I can't imagine how it would work as a trackable and think the note in the page is kind of clueless. As I am about this action.

Good.

And to the discussion I'd add this.

From the organization's perspective, if the travelers create extra work, I can see how they want to get rid of them. As long as there's candor in the rationale, and no sugar-coating with add-ons about how eliminating the travelers supposedly helps the members' experiences, fine. I'm disappointed and I wish it wasn't happening, but I understand.

From the perspective of individual members, though, I have seen absolutely nothing that supports eliminating travelers, and members' arguments that this step will supposedly help the game are completely unpersuasive, in my opinion. If you don't like travelers, ignore them and seek other caches! *Some people enjoy travelers,* so why take away the fun? So what that there's a bit more administrative stuff - we're (sadly, in my opinion) down to a very small number of travelers anyway, so why not accept the remainder??

This was a mistake, pure and simple.

No kidding!

When this first came up with the "no multiple logging" thing, the response I got to my complaint to Groundspeak was an explanation that these were Locationless caches incorrectly marked as Virtuals (as in the case of Brass Cap Cache) or Multis (as in the cases of Leap Frog and Stash-n-Dash) and had been "overlooked" when Locationless caches were archived. I couldn't believe that someone representing Groundspeak didn't even know enough about the history of the game to know that Locationless caches and moving caches were NOT the same thing.

No kidding. I can understand that Stash-n-Dash doesn't really work if if can't move, but outforthehunt should have been given the chance to find a final permanent location for Leap Frog and allowed to pick one final location for the Brass Cap Cache where it could have remained. This was a classless move by Groundspeak and a slap in the face to one of the pioneers of caching. Unbelievable.

I suspect the cache pages are locked precisely so that those of us who are upset cannot add a note.

Which completely overlooks the fact that Notes can be used for legitimate purposes. You'll see on GC43F3 that many of us were using Notes to track our Brass Cap finds after the decision about "no multiple logging" came into effect.
