Mission 9 Project Ape cache missing

Messed up. Sad it will end up archived, I can't seeing them making an exception for this one and not the others...

And then there was ONE

Well, you never know. It is kind of close to HQ, and people make the pilgrimage to visit HQ and find the Ape cache. But you're right, I doubt they will make an exception. Good time to bring up the conspiracy theory about the Maryland and Illinois ones going missing within a couple weeks of each other though, eh?

Well, given that moun10bike only Disabled it instead of Archiving it right away gives us some hope that it might be saved. It will be interesting to say the least, as I expect angst either way.

Shame that the cache went missing just weeks before the tunnel is set to re-open. I know the next time we're in the area I'm doing that hike again so I can get the tunnel experience. Coming at this cache from the west side sort of felt like "cheating".

If it was up to me they would just replace (unarchived) them all. Who cares if it is not the exact same container? These caches are historic.

And rename them the Apes of Theseus?

The whole point of the "history" is the actual caches. If you've replaced everything about it, are you finding an Ape cache, or the spot where an Ape cache used to be?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus

Greek legend

According to Greek legend as reported by Plutarch,

The ship wherein Theseus and the youth of Athens returned [from Crete] had thirty oars, and was preserved by the Athenians down even to the time of Demetrius Phalereus, for they took away the old planks as they decayed, putting in new and stronger timber in their place, insomuch that this ship became a standing example among the philosophers, for the logical question of things that grow; one side holding that the ship remained the same, and the other contending that it was not the same.

—Plutarch, Theseus[1]

Plutarch thus questions whether the ship would remain the same if it were entirely replaced, piece by piece. Centuries later, the philosopher Thomas Hobbes introduced a further puzzle, wondering: what would happen if the original planks were gathered up after they were replaced, and used to build a second ship.[2] Which ship, if either, is the original Ship of Theseus?

Yes, I know about the Ship of Theseus. I was a History minor.

The thing is, why replace any cache? Why not just say soon as any cache goes missing it needs to be archived. No replacing it. The planet of the apes prop is long gone so how does a container -- one that can be easily replaced, make any difference? The important thing is people can go and experience these awesome, historic and iconic hides. I contend that it is not the actual container that is important but the hide. Don't put the emphasis on the physical but on the experience.

No offense to Moun10Bike,. but I'm amazed that cache lasted as long as it did, given that it was...

(possible spoilers below, nothing the cache page won't show you though)

a huge metal box in a suspicious pile of rocks next to an exposed stump right off a heavily used path.

Just glad we got it off our list last year.

Groundspeak's position on the other A.P.E. caches has been that once the A.P.E. container was gone it was no longer an A.P.E. cache. I'd be surprised if it was any different for this one, but seeing as the adoptive owner's a Groundspeak employee, if an exception was to be made, it'd be made for this one.

I haven't found any of the ape caches, so I could be wrong. But I was under the impression that the only thing special about these is the container. After it's gone, you're left with just another ammo box under a pile of rocks.

Link to comment

Will someone please just go out there and drop a similar container? Post a note that the theif returned it and chain it to a rock. I don't think that they will really care at that point if it is the correct one.

Every cell in the human body (excepting brain cells) gets replaced on a regular basis, but it does not mean that you are a different person. The listing and location iod the cache still the same, so let it live!

I was under the impression that the only special thing about these was the icon, the Souvenir, and the movie props that are long gone. It was already an ammo can under a pile of rocks. Considering the amount of "trifecta" love I don't really expect this to be archived.

The concept is I guess "historic" much in the same way the point in my life when I first discovered I could wiggle my ears is "historic". Everything is relative.

As I pointed out above, the cache has a current owner, Moun10Bike, who is a Groundspeak lackey. He's aware of the situation and is determining a course of action:

Our cache thief has decided to steal the entire container this time. I'm disabling while I figure out a course of action. Many apologies to those who have looked for the cache this weekend and come up empty.

I don't think he'd cotton to a cache vigilante just plunkng down an ammo can on their own initiative. He's conferring with Groundspeak, and until they make a decision, anyone who wants an A.P.E. cache had better start shopping for flights to Sao Paulo.

The funny thing is... I do go to Sao Paulo about once per quarter. I was hoping to hit the WA state cache (I go to WA about once per month). Plus, if I recall, the Sao Paulo cache is roughly a 5 hour drive outside of the city -vs- a 1 hour drive from Seattle.

But... if I need to go risk the jungles of Brazil, perhaps I will. No-one has ever accused me of being bright!

What is a cache??

Many caches are continued all the time when the container goes missing.

This cache container is a HUGE ammo box. The only special thing about it was the lid had the ape logo on it.

That lid went missing last year and a big contingent of cachers went out and replaced it.

So the container that was there just prior to being stolen this time, was really nothing special either.

The contents have been muggled a whole lot.

And replaced.

When I found this cache I was lucky enough that they had just replaced everything, so I got to look at the scripts from the movie, photos and other memorabilia.

I actually happen to have in my possession, a travel bug that was supposed to remain in the ape cache that I found in another local cache. I knew it wasn't supposed to travel so I grabbed it. After repeatedly getting no responses to my requests for anyone visiting the cache to take it up there, I have been planning another trip up to take it back. So at least one original piece is available to start the new cache.

What is a cache?

The lid has been replaced. The body of the cache container is nothing special. The contents have been replaced before.

But this cache has been something very special.

The HEART of this cache is what has kept it going.

This cache obviously means a whole lot to a lot of people.

People travel from around the world to get this cache.

This cache is a major geocaching destination. It means a lot to a whole lot of people.

This cache needs to survive.

Geocachers need their caches that are geocaching "mecca" caches, and we have very few.

The last one to go missing was the Maryland one. There was some discussion of replacing it, but to the chagrin of many it was decided to archive it. I can't see why the decision should be any different with this one.

I'm disappointed that they were archived, chances are, I won't ever get one, as that one and the one in NYC were the only two within driving distance.

I have a large giant ammo container I would donate if its truly missing. Will have to check it out.

And no, I seriously doubt Moun10bike will archive this listing due to someone muggling it. There are plenty of folks around Seattle who would gladly come out and replace it themselves that let one or two jerks take this one cache away.

Link to comment

Well I'm hearing that Jeremy does indeed want to archive it in line with the stance that once an ape cache is gone it is gone.

But the fact is they think they know who took this one, and archiving it will just justify that act and make the thief very happy. It's not good to please a thief.

It's a tough position.

If they put it back the same person will just take it again they think.

But they know what this cache means to the community.

If I have said anything that should not be publicly known, a moderator is free to delete any of the above.

Ugh. Just talked to one of the folks in the know and it sounds like they indeed are thinking of archiving it. So many folks fly into Seattle because of the triad and specifically, the ape cache. I cant imagine us caving in to a thief, or any muggle, who is trying to deliberately make a few people unhappy. Would they tear down the Space Needle if one person put graffiti on it? Course, if someone stole the Space Needle, like Dr. Evil or the guy from Despicable Me, that would be hard to replace.

I agree some what, I have been to HQ several times and have personally touched a ( SPARE ) Ape Cache container with posters for trade just like the one used in WA, and being the owner and care taker of the Ape Cache in Brazil , I believe it should be replaced with the spare. The area has been a destination for many to go to HQ, location of the first cache placed and the Ape cache in WA. Why do you think a GeoWoostock was there for Groundspeak ten anniversary, was to bring more cachers to the area.

Now after taking a very deep breath ( not that I want to but will ) If it turns out to be an Ape original box is the key, Then I will gracefully give up my Ape Cacahe in Brazil to either to Jon or Groundspeak if it can be done, its a very big peace of history for our sport. This will bring more pleasure to folks in the sport if there has to be a last one it should be in WA

but what do I know we just go lucky

wow, so glad that the Brazil ape cache owner could interject his opinion and make an offer here. Thanks for taking the time to do so!!!!

Aren't the ape cache containers just the REALLY big super-jumbo sized ammo cans? Are they made of unobtainium or locks of Tim Burton's hair?

I understand how important this cache may be to some people. Actually, no I don't. I mean it's cool, and I'd love to visit the spot it's hidden at and I'd love to get the icon, but I think the cooler thing is the concept behind the series and no muggle could ever take that away. I can see how uber cool it would have been to find one of these back when they were full of the super rare swag that was in them, but really, is there anything about the physical cache now that grants wishes or cures the blind?

Yes please GS take him up on it. But since whoever stole it in the first place may just steal the next one. I guess would be the point if they choose to archive it. You can keep replacing it but the location is still the same and is compromised and it will happen again unless they move it like they did with the Original Stash.

That indeed is a very generous offer Joe, but I too would be against it. Mission #4 is special in it's own right and should not be compromised to bring back Mission #9. Just my $0.02  .

While it is no skin off my back one way or another I would think that treating this differently than the the other ones would be unfair.

Oh dear, when I got the notification about this last night I didn't realize the history behind archiving them if the container wasn't original. I went to bed last night under the assumption that it would be replaced, just as the lids were last year (once in the summer, again in November- apparently by the same nasty person with a vendetta against GS and the CO).

This makes me so sad. We were very much looking forward to the big tunnel opening event in August, it was going to be our first real event (we've attended a local "non-event" but never a real, official event). *sigh* Even bought glow-bracelets and headlamps for the kids (I know that doesn't compare to a plane ticket).

How about we bring virtuals back and the first new virtual is the ape cache, complete with icon?

Oooooh, I like this idea (you can't steal something that is virtual) but I suppose the traditionalists will cry foul. Now I'm wishin' we'd run up and found it while we could rather than waiting for the tunnel to open. *sigh*

If the decision is made to replace the container I think it should be an identical container that can be decorated nicely with the Planet of the Apes theme on/ in it. It will never be the orginal but still make it something special to visit. Cache owners replace missing containers all of the time. I can understand why they would need to be consistent with the archiving of this cache as they have done with the other APE caches.

That doesn't even make sense. Your icon list is a history of your finds. That would be like decrementing your total found count on every archival.

There are too many sacred cows in this hobby as it is. If the other caches were archived then the container went missing, then sadly enough, this one should probably be too. But I'm still not convinced it will be.

I'm sure it stinks, but you did the right thing. Finding it without the tunnel was somewhat uneventful.

I certainly hope GS takes into account the many things that this cache brings to Washington state.

Money, tourism etc.

There is also a planned event that includes this cache coming up also commemorating the opening of

the tunnel.

Many of us here (locals) will be more than happy to donate another APE sized container and even go

back up there to replace.

I hope this one will come back to life.
