mirek_prague
Hi, I have eTrex 10, which is limited by 8 MB of memory only. So for me is important to check regulary which size of memory is free. When I am at home I can receive this information from Garmin Express program at computer. But how to do it out of computer, when I am in teraine? Is it possible to know which memory receive in eTrex 10 from menus inside of eTrex 10? Or from any diagnostic page in eTrex 10 etc.? Thanks for advice. Mirek Quote Link to comment

Have this situation: I am in field for 7 days (without possibility to work with computer) a therefore I am affraid of error message "not enough memory". So I solve in advance the problem which type of dates inside eTrex I have to delete: waypoints, or tracks etc. But there are two possibilities: 1) Maybe the message "not enough memory" WILL NOT DISPLAY at all till end of my long trip (because I have plenty of free memory just now) and then was my decision to delete some waypoints or tracks very bad and i will then be limited to use my eTrex in field because I will not use these waypoints or tracks etc. 2) But maybe the message "not enough memory" WILL DISPLAY, but I will not to notice of this error and my eTrex will not to write my current track into memory, which may then caused, that I will lose my path etc. So this is the reason, I need to know how much free memory my eTrex has in field. +Mineral2
The data encoded in GPX files is quite small. It would take a lot of tracks and waypoints to fill up 8 MB. So if you're out for a week or two without a computer, you're not likely to fill the device unless you leave home with it already close to being full. The limits on your device are: 500 GPX files 1,000 waypoints 2,000 geocaches 50 routes, 250 points per route 100 saved tracks 500 archive tracks* 10,000 points per track Those limits are likely placed well below the hardware limitations. If you're still not convinced and you're still concerned about running out of space in the field, then perhaps you want to upgrade your GPS to just about any other model. Quote Link to comment
+HHL
OK, I now see your point. The biggest track that my GPSr wrote in 2016 has a file size of 823 kb. The average size of saved tracks is ~300 kb. Hans Quote Link to comment
Pacific NW
(Climbs on soapbox...) Unfortunately, I think Garmin really missed the mark on the eTrex 10 with regards to this issue. Flash memory is so cheap, to include only 8MB is downright ridiculous. It's an otherwise excellent unit, with great reception and battery life, but very hampered by the memory limitation. Hi Pacific NW, yes, I am hapy with perfect reception and fantastic batery life. But absence of possibility to use memory card is very unpleasent. Mirek Quote Link to comment
+Mineral2
yes, I am hapy with perfect reception and fantastic batery life. But absence of possibility to use memory card is very unpleasent. For reference, the eTrex 20x is rated to have the same battery life as the eTex 10 (25 hours, based on Garmin's specs), yet it has just under 4GB of onboard memory plus the ability to use cards (though none of the Garmin handhelds can write data directly to the card, but you can use the card to store maps and reference data to view while you're out and about), and increased file limitations (5000 geocaches vs 2000 for example). Is it worth paying twice the cost of the eTrex 10? I don't know. I guess it depends if you use it for more than basic navigation and trip logging. Quote Link to comment
+gpsblake
I've never been able to get 2,000 geocaches into an Etrex 10 even after removing the time zone and "base map" I think the 8 MB limit is done on purpose, it would probably only cost them pennies to put 128 MB or more into the unit. The Etrex 10 CAN do mapping but only in small small chunks with a minimal amount of geocaches loaded in. 128 MB would make this unit far more effective in geocaching (but probably would cut into the sales of the Etrex 20x) Edited September 23, 2016 by gpsblake Quote Link to comment
